LTU goes five sets with Concordia, wins 3-2 on Saturday afternoon

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball team defeated Concordia (Mich.) University - Ann Arbor 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Don Ridler Field House.

Lawrence Tech (13-13, 3-5 WHAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead following 25-21 and 25-23 set wins. In the opening set, LTU took and early 7-3 lead before Concordia was able to cut the lead to one, 9-8. Lawrence Tech responded with a 11-7 run that gave the Blue Devils a 20-15 and seal the 25-21 win.

In set two, the game went back-and-forth with LTU taking a 15-11 lead then the Cardinals coming back to cut it to 16-15. The set was tied 21-21 before LTU was able to string the last two points together to take a commanding 2-0 lead on the Cardinals.

Concordia (13-11, 2-6 WHAC) did not wither after trailing 11-9 in the third set. The Cardinals responded with a 4-0 mini-run to take a 13-11 lead. LTU tied the set at 14-14, but Concordia scored six of the next eight points to take a 21-16 lead. CUAA went on to win the set 25-20 and cut the match lead to 2-1.

The fourth set was similar to the previous three with both teams battling as the Cardinals took a 9-5 lead early in the set. LTU responded with a run of their own to tie it at 13-13. The set ended up going back-and-forth with CUAA able to get the last two points of the set to win 25-22 after LTU had cut the lead to 20-19.

The final set continued with the same formula as both teams battled for the win with CUAA up 13-12 only to have LTU take the last three points to take the set 15-13 and seal the match win 3-2.

Varvara Gromakova (FR/Moscow, Russia) led the way with a .250 hitting percentage and 12 kills on 24 attacks while Briana Reum (JR/South Elgin, IL) led the team in kills with 15. Kristi Doherty (FR/Davison, Mich.) was the team leader with 46 assists and 16 digs. Alisha Stidam (JR/Barrie, Ontario CAN) added 11 kills with Brenna Quinn (JR/Bucyrus, OH) adding 10.

Lawrence Tech is back on the court October 5 in Dearborn, Mich., when they face University of Michigan-Dearborn in WHAC action. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
