GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The 18th-ranked Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University (LTU) women's basketball team fell to No. 8 Davenport (Mich.) University in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Championship Game in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Lawrence Tech (24-4) opened the game trailing 10-2, but a 10-0 run to close first quarter tied the game at 15-15. LTU added five more points to start the second period as they jumped out to a 20-15 lead with 8:34 left in the half. Davenport tied it at 28-28 with just over 2:30 left in the first half.
The Blue Devils went cold from the field as Davenport went on a 17-8 run to take a 32-28 lead at halftime. Autumn Whirley (FR/Eaton, Ohio) and Maegan Branham (JR/Michigan Center, MI) each finished the half with eight points each with both going 2-for-2 from three-point range. Branham added four rebounds. Alex Law led the way from Davenport with 11 points in the first 20 minutes.
Davenport (27-5) built upon its four-point lead to open the third quarter with a 40-30 lead with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter. The Panthers used a 30-13 run over the end of the second quarter to the beginning of the fourth to take a 58-41 lead.
Lawrence Tech was unable to spark a fourth quarter comeback as Davenport built a 70-51 lead with 4:45 left in the game as they went on to win the WHAC Tournament 78-61.
LTU was led by Butler with 17 points and five rebounds while Branham added 11 points and six rebounds in the WHAC Championship game. Jazmine Brown (SR/Chesterfield, MI) finished with nine points, four rebounds, and three assists.
As a team, the Blue Devils shot just 36.4 percent from the field while Davenport shot 43.5 percent from the field and outrebound LTU 45-31.
