Lawrence Tech Defeats Madonna 4-2 to take First Place in the WHAC

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's soccer team defeated Madonna (Mich.) University 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the LTU Athletic Field. The win moves Lawrence Tech into sole possesion of first place in the WHAC with 16 points. This is the first time the Blue Devils have been top of the ladder this late into the season.

Lawrence Tech (9-2-2, 5-0-1) fell behind in the first half as Yuri Farkas took a rebound and put it past Max Jewett (SO/Sterling Heights, Mich.) for a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute. Santiago Amigo (JR/Madrid, Spain) equalized in the final minute of the first half with a header off a Chris Serwatka (JR/Troy, Mich.) corner kick with 16 seconds left in the half.

It was all Blue Devils in the second half as Nico Rodriguez-Bermejo assisted on the next three goals, two off corner kicks. Michael Avila (SO/Toronto, ONT, Canada) scored the first goal of the second half off a header in the 51st minute as Rodriguez-Bermejo had a great corner to give LTU a 2-1 lead. Lawrence Tech scored 14 minutes later, this one Bryce Nicholson (FR/Jenison, MI) off another Rodriguez-Bermejo corner to give LTU a 3-1 lead in the 74th minute.

Skyler Russ (SR/Rochester Hills, MI) made it 4-1 in the 80th minute when he took a cross from Rodriguez-Bermejo to the back of the net. Madonna (9-2-1, 4-1-1) added a goal from midfield as Hector Morales took the kickoff and sailed into the back of the net to cut the lead to 4-2.

Jewett made five saves on the day while allowing two goals in 90 minutes of action while Joe Smith made three saves while allowing four goals. Rodriguez-Bermejo finished the game with five shots while Farkas added five shots on goal.
