Lawrence Tech Upset Bid Comes up Short at No. 22 Madonna, fall 3-2

LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball team comeback bid at No. 22-ranked Madonna (Mich.) University came up short after forcing a fifth set after being down 2-0 in Livonia, Mich.

Lawrence Tech (8-5, 1-1) fell behind in the match 2-0 before mounting a comeback to tie it at 2-2. The Blue Devils took a 7-4 lead in the third set following a kill by Briana Reum (SR/South Elgin, IL) and didn't look back as they went on to win the set 25-20.

In the fourth set, Lawrence Tech trailed 5-4 before rattling off five straight points to take a 9-5 lead and built it to 17-11 after a Makenna Strunk (JR/Northville, Mich.) ace.

Madonna (13-2, 2-0) cut the lead to three, 20-17, but Lawrence Tech closed the set out with a 5-0 run to force the fifth set. The Crusaders took the early 7-3 lead in the fifth set, but the Blue Devils cut it to two at 8-6. Madonna closed the fifth set with a 7-2 run to seal the win.

Kristi Doherty (SO/Davison, Mich.), reigning conference setter of the week, finished with 46 assists and 15 digs. Zakia Hunt (SO/Livonia, Mich.), the current conference attacker of the week, continued her great play at the net with a .357 hitting percentage. Hunt finished the match with 12 kills while Varvara Gromakova (SO/Moscow, Russia) led the team with 14 kills and recorded a .314 hitting percentage. Reum added 11 kills while Isabella McDonald (FR/Farmington, Michigan) had nine kills on 24 total attacks.

Lawrence Tech is back on the court Friday, Sept. 15 when they face Lourdes (Ohio) University in Sylvania, Ohio. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
