HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's soccer team defeated Huntington (Ind.) University 2-1 in double-overtime at the HU Soccer Complex in Huntington, Ind. Sarah Trapp (JR/Plymouth, Mich.) won the game for LTU, 10 seconds into the second overtime as sh received the ball on the far sideline, got past the defender, shot the ball, floating it over the keeper to give LTU the 2-1 win.
Lawrence Tech (3-4) played a strong first half as they held off Huntington with three saves by Rebecca Almandoz (FR/Palmiste, San Fernando, Trinid). In the 29th minute, Almandoz made a diving save to keep the game scoreless in the first half. LTU finished the first half with no shots on goal.
In the second half, Huntington were able to take a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute on a goal from Brandi Spear. The game remained 1-0 until the 76th minute when Alayne Nyboer (SO/Grandville, Mich.) scored to tie the match at 1-1. The Blue Devils defense played well as Megan Dixon (SR/Andover, Minn.) made four saves.
Lawrence Tech's Sarah Trapp and Tia Lamie (SO/Portage, Mich.) had the lone shot for the Blue Devils in the opening overtime, but it was her shot 10 seconds into the second overtime that gave LTU the 2-1 win.
The Blue Devils were led by Trapp and Nyboer with two shots and a goal each. Lamie and Marie Anne Torres (JR/Mississauga, Ont., Canada) added assists.
Lawrence Tech returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 22 when they travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Cornerstone (Mich.) University in the 2017 WHAC opener.
