DEARBORN, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball team defeated UM-Dearborn 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-29) on Wednesday night in Dearborn, Mich. The win moves the Blue Devils to 9-3 in conference play.
Lawrence Tech (15-6, 9-3) got off to a quick start in the opening set, taking the early 4-0 lead. The Blue Devils extended their lead to 15-9 as Lexi Szymoniak (SR/Onaway, Mich.) and Brittany Schmidt (SR/Richmond, MI) each had a kill while Jess Lodge (SO/Macomb, Mich.) had three kills during the run. The Wolverines attempted to get back into the set, but good defense by Lawrence Tech gave the Blue Devils at 25-18 set win.
In the second set, it was UM-Dearborn (4-17, 1-11) who got off to a 6-2 start before Lawrence Tech battled back to tie it at 7-7 as Zakia Hunt (JR/Livonia, Mich.) hit two straight kills. Nichole Hyduk (FR/Macomb, Mich.) served the next three points including an ace to give the Blue Devils an 11-8 lead. Kristi Doherty (JR/Davison, Mich.) served four straight points including an ace to push the lead to 16-10 and for the Wolverines to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, UM-Dearborn earned the next point, but LTU maintained its lead as they got a block from Gromakova and Isabella McDonald (SO/Farmington, Michigan) to make it 18-11. The Wolverines mounted another comeback, cutting the lead from 23-14 to 23-18 before the Blue Devils closed the set with a Schmidt service ace for the 25-18 win.
Lawrence Tech jumped all over UM-Dearborn in the third set, going up 13-3 as Gromakova and Schmidt served the Blue Devils to a 10 point lead. The teams went back-and-forth as LTU held on to the lead, 20-9. The Wolverines won the next four point to make it a 20-13 lead, but it was Alaina Hawthorn (FR/Tipp City, Ohio) with the final kill of the set to win it for Lawrence Tech, 25-19.
Schmidt led the way for Lawrence Tech with 12 kills and a .233 hitting percentage to go with 16 digs and three aces. Doherty finished with 29 assists, an ace and three digs while Hawthorne added five kills including the match winner.
Lawrence Tech is back on the court Friday, October 12 when the head to Indiana Tech for the Indiana Tech Tournament. The matches start at 12 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
