SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball team lost to (RV) Aquinas (Mich.) College 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-17) on Friday night in Southfield, Mich.
Lawrence Tech (16-10, 9-5) struggled from the onset as Aquinas opened the first set with a 4-2 lead, but Lawrence Tech tied the set at 8-8 and took a 10-8 lead on a kill from Varvara Gromakova. The Saints tied it at 14-14 but Lawrence Tech took the lead at 17-14. Aquinas tied it again at 18-18, but the Blue Devils battled back to retake the lead at 22-20 on a block from Zakia Hunt and Gromakova. Aquinas closed the set on a 5-0 run to take the set 25-22.
Aquinas (24-6, 11-3) took the second set as they jumped out to a 12-6 lead after a 9-2 run. They continued to build their lead as they took a 20-13 lead before closing the set out 25-17. The Blue Devils came out in the third set with a 3-1 lead as the teams went back-and-forth with seven ties. The Saints followed with a 9-2 run to take a 22-15 lead before closing the set out 25-17.
Lawrence Tech was led by Kristi Doherty with 13 kills and eight assists with six digs. Gromakova finished the match with seven kills and a .412 hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils are back on the court Saturday, October 20 when they host Cornerstone (Mich.) University at 1 p.m. inside Don Ridler Field House.
