ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball team defeated Rochester (Mich.) College 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-15) on Wednesday night in Rochester, Mich. The Blue Devils now have 11 wins in conference play, the most conference wins in program history.
Lawrence Tech (18-10, 11-5) finished the match with a .260 hitting percentage as Zakia Hunt (JR/Livonia, Mich.) led the way with a .294 on 17 attacks for nine kills. Brittany Schmidt (SR/Richmond, MI) had a team high 13 kills while Jess Lodge (SO/Macomb, Mich.) hit .286 with eight kills. Kristi Doherty (JR/Davison, Mich.) recorded 37 assists, 15 digs, and four aces.
The Blue Devils opened the first set down 6-2, but battled back to tie it at 7-7 and finally took the lead at 11-10 on a block from Dacey Cook (SR/Potterville, Mich.) and Varvara Gromakova (JR/Moscow, Russia). Lawrence Tech finished off a 10-2 run to take a commanding 18-12 lead. Rochester cut the lead to 20-17 but the Blue Devils finished the set off with five straight point to take the 1-0 lead, 25-17.
Rochester (2-26, 1-15) held a 4-2 lead in the second set and pushed it to 10-6 before Lawrence Tech went on a 5-0 run on the serve of Reinali Calisin (FR/Edmonton, Alberta) to take a 11-10 lead. The Warriors retook the lead at 13-11, but Lawrence Tech once again responded with a run, this one a 7-0 run as Schmidt and Hunt had a pair of kills each and combined on a block to make it 18-13. The Blue Devils closed the set with four straight kills as Lexi Szymoniak (SR/Onaway, Mich.), Lodge, Cook, and Schmidt seal the win 25-16.
The Warriors took the early lead in the third set, similar to the previous two, but the Lawrence Tech offense was too strong. After going up 6-3, the Blue Devils tied the set at 8-8 and went on a 12-1 run to take a 20-9 lead. Schmidt and Isabella McDonald (SO/Farmington, Michigan) closed the set out with a pair of kills to win the set 25-15 and take the match 3-0.
The Blue Devils are back on the court Friday, October 26 when they face Northwestern Ohio at 7 p.m. The head to Indiana Tech on Saturday, October 27 for their penultimate road match. Senior night is set for October 31 when the Blue Devils host Madonna (Mich.) University.
