Blue Devils Down Racers 3-1 in WHAC Game

Southfield, Mich.- The Lawrence Technological University (Mich.) women's volleyball team defeated University of Northwestern Ohio with a score of 3-1. The Blue Devils won the first, second and fourth sets with scores of 25-20, 25-17, and 25-23 respectively, and lost the third set with a 17-25 score.

After a slow start, in which the Racers had a 10-9 lead in the scoreboard, LTU made a great comeback and won the first set with a score of 25-17. In this set, the Blue Devils had 38 total attack attempts, 16 kills, and 3 errors. UNOH had 44 total attack attempts, 15 kills, and 8 errors.

In the second set, LTU had 25 total attack attempts, 11 kills, and 4 errors. The Racers had 37 total attack attempts, 9 kills, and 12 errors. The final score of this set was 25-17 in favor of Lawrence Tech. In the third set, the Blue Devils had 25 total attack attempts, 8 kills, and 6 errors. UNOH had 30 total attack attempts, 10 kills, and 5 errors. The Racers won this set 25-17.

In the last set, Lawrence Tech had 35 total attack attempts, 14 kills, and 2 errors. The Racers had a total of 41 attempts, 16 kills, and 8 errors. This last set was very close towards the end, as the game was tied 23-23, but a kill by Jessica Lodge (JR/Macomb, Mich.) and an ace by Reinali Calisin (FR/Edmonton, Alberta) gave LTU the two missing points to win it with a 25-23 score.

The Blue Devil front line did an excellent job, as they had 13 blocks throughout the game, and kept UNOH's hitting percentage to 0.112. Dacey Cook (SR/Potterville, Mich.) and Varvara Gromakova (JR/Moscow, Russia) were the players with most blocks, seven and five respectively. Brittany Schmidt (SR/Richmond, Mich.) was the Blue Devil with most digs, 15, and was followed by Nichole Hyduk (FR/Macomb, Mich.) with nine.

The Blue Devils finished the match with 49 kills and a 0.276 hitting percentage. Schmidt was the Blue Devil with most kills, 15, and was followed by Lodge and Gromakova with 10 and seven respectively. Cook was the player with the highest kill percentage, 0.60, followed by Kristi Doherty (JR/Davison, Mich.) with 0.375 and Lodge with 0.320. Doherty was the Blue Devil with most assists, 40, which is the 87% of Lawrence Tech's total assists as a team, 46.

The Blue Devils will be back in the action tomorrow, October 27 in Fort Wayne when they visit Indiana Tech. Opening serve is set for 1 PM.
