SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological University (Mich.) women's soccer team (4-5-2, WHAC 1-2-1) competed in a very physical, long and exciting game that went into double overtime against Aquinas College (Mich.), where the game ended in a scoreless tie, 0-0.
The entire first 90 minutes were scoreless as LTU fought with Aquinas College Saints (7-3-1, 3-0-1) who received votes prior to their match up in Grand Rapids, Mich. With several girls coming off the bench to keep their legs fresh, the battle continued with opportunity after opportunity unfolding through the game. In the first half, LTU did not get a shot off on net, but the Saints shot nine times. The second half, they got their first shot on goal, but Aquinas took 11 shots off. Come the first overtime, the Saints were relentless on goal, adding three more chances on net. The second overtime saw another chance from the Blue Devils to take the win, but went wide, with the Saints taking three more shots, all being stopped by LTU. The lone two shots came from Lindsey Schupbach (FR/Rochester, Mich.) and Allexus Barnes (SO/Middleville, MI)
Defensively, this was a very strong game for both teams. Goalie Rebecca Almandoz (SO/Palmiste, San Fernando, Trinid) had ten saves to end the night, making a few of those saves back to back and many towards the end of the game. The Saints outshot the Blue Devils 26-2. Despite this, the team stayed in the game and ended in a solid tie before heading into the last seven games of their regular season.
The Blue Devils are back home on October 6 where they play Cleary University (Mich.) at the LTU Athletic Field where the game is set to begin at 7 p.m. The Cougars of Cleary are currently 5-4-1 overall this season and 0-3-1 in the WHAC.
