SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball team defeated Siena Heights (Mich.) University 3-1 (25-13, 25-20, 19-25, 25-6) to move to 7-3 in conference play.

Lawrence Tech (13-6, 7-3) opened the match in dominating fashion as they took a 6-1 lead on five straight kills and an attack error by Siena Heights. The Blue Devils expanded the lead to 14-5 before the Saints battled back to make it a five point deficit 15-10. Brittany Schmidt (SR/Richmond, MI) closed the set out, serving the final five points to take the set 25-13.

The Blue Devils continued their dominating play in the second set, taking a 19-12 lead on Siena Heights as Kristi Doherty (JR/Davison, Mich.), Varvara Gromakova (JR/Moscow, Russia), and Nichole Hyduk (FR/Macomb, Mich.) served 14 of the Blue Devils 25 points. Gromakova ended the set with two straight Siena Heights errors to take it 25-20.

Siena Heights (10-7, 5-5) took set three 25-19 as they jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and took control of the set at 7-6. They expanded the lead to 15-9 and closed the set with two fo the final three points.

In the third set, Lawrence Tech trailed Siena Heights 4-3, but a kill from Zakia Hunt (JR/Livonia, Mich.) led to a 16-0 run by Lawrence Tech as Gromakova served 15 straight points to take a 19-4 lead. The Blue Devils held on as Hyduk closed the set with four straight serves as Alaina Hawthorn (FR/Tipp City, Ohio) got the final kill to take the set 25-6.

Hunt led the way with 14 kills, three blocks, and a .400 hitting percentage as Schmidt recorded 11 kills and a .219 hitting percentage. Hawthorn finished with four attacks, three kills and no errors to hit .600. Doherty finished with 43 digs, two aces, and 21 digs while Lexi Szymoniak (SR/Onaway, Mich.) recorded 11 digs and one ace.

The Blue Devils are back on the court Friday, October 5 when they host Concordia (Mich.) University - Ann Arbor at 7 p.m.
