SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball team defeated (RV) Lourdes (Ohio) University 3-2 (11-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 15-8) on Wednesday night in Southfield, Mich.
Lawrence Tech (8-3) needed to go five sets with Lourdes to get the programs first win over the Gray Wolves in 15 attempts. The Blue Devils opened the match with a 25-11 loss, but rebounded in the next set to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 win. The Blue Devils took a 6-1 lead in the set, but the Gray Wolves battled back to tie the set at 7-7 and took the lead at 11-10. Lawrence Tech and Lourdes would battle throughout the rest of the set until the Blue Devils closed it out with the final two points.
In set three, Lourdes built a 16-9 lead on Lawrence Tech, but the Blue Devils didn't back down as they won nine of the next 12 points to tie the match at 21-21. Kristi Doherty (JR/Davison, Mich.) closed the set with a kill to give Lawrence Tech a 2-1 lead in the match. Lourdes responded in the fourth set after falling behind 17-13, the Gray Wolves tied it at 21-21 and took the next four of six points to even the match at 2-2. In the final set, Lawrence Tech went up 7-3 to open and close the set with three of the final four points to earn the set with at 15-8 and take the match at 3-2.
Doherty led the way with 14 kills and 26 assists while Jess Lodge (SO/Macomb, Mich.) added 13 kills and seven digs. Lexi Szymoniak (SR/Onaway, Mich.) had 11 assists and four digs for the Blue Devils. Monique Oliveira led the game with 18 kills for Lourdes while Carol Goncalves added 41 assists.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Friday, September 14 when they travel to Concordia (Mich.) University - Ann Arbor. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
