Lawrence Tech at ITA Regional Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The Lawrence Technological University (Mich.) women's tennis team participated in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.) and organized by the ITA on September 13-15. This was a doubles and singles tournament and the format was elimination in every round.

The Blue Devils' doubles pairings were Anusha Varudandi (SO/Parkland, Fla.) and Sabrina Mateos (JR/Mexico City, Mexico), Samantha Kohn (SO/Dearborn, Mich.) and Samantha Weber(FR/Clarkston, Mich.), and Maria Alvarez (JR/Ames, La Coruna, Spain) and Maria Vega-Hazas (FR/Santander, Spain).

Varudandi and Mateos were the top LTU pairing in the doubles tournament as they made it to the quarterfinals. In their first match, they beat Taylor Stanchin and Regina Faber of the University of St. Francis (Ind.) 8-0. In their second match, they played against fellow Blue Devils Kohn and Weber and won 8-6. Maria Sunga and Maria Lueken of Marian University (Ind.) eliminated Varudandi and Mateos in the third round. Giovanni Martinez and Sebastian Salas of Huntington University (Ind.) 8-3.

Kohn and Weber beat Mary Sayre and Katie Hart of Indiana University Kokomo (Ind.) 8-3 in their first match. However, as previously mentioned, Varudandi and Mateos eliminated them in the second round.

Alvarez and Vega-Hazas lost in the first round of the tournament and participated in the doubles consolation draw. They made it to the second round.

The top LTU player in the singles draw of the tournament was Varudandi as she made it to the third round and finished in 8th place. Alvarez and Weber followed Varudandi and made it to the second round. The rest of the Blue Devils: Kohn, Mateos, and Vega-Hazas lost in the first round and made it to the singles consolation draw. Mateos and Vega-Hazas made it to the semifinals, while Kohn lost in the first round.

The Blue Devils will be back on the court on Wednesday, September 19 at 4:00 PM in Adrian, Mich. when they face Adrian College (Mich.).
