GOSHEN, Ind. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's volleyball team defeated Goshen (Ind.) College 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-16) to open conference play with a win, their third straight since starting the season 0-3.

Lawrence Tech (3-3, 1-0) jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, taking a 10-5 lead on a kill from Zachary Narkiewicz to end the 6-1 run. The Blue Devils extended the lead to 13-6 following a pair of Goshen attacking errors as Lawrence Tech ran away with the set for a 25-16 win.

The second set was a thriller, going back-and-forth as Goshen took a 9-6 lead, but the Blue Devils battled back to make it 10-10. The Maple Leafs retook the lead at 11-10 to start a point-for-point battle as it was tied six times starting at 11-11 and ending at 18-18 as Lawrence Tech took the lead at 23-20. Goshen did not wilt, coming back to tie it once again, this time at 23-23, 24-24, and 25-25. Lawrence Tech got kills from Patton and Narkiewicz to earn the 27-25 win and take a 2-0 lead.

Joshua Eckert opened the third set with four straight service points as Ooms, Joseph Balanda, and Gospel Sua all earned kills to give the Blue Devils a 4-0 lead. Goshen cut it to 9-8, but that's as close as they would get in the third as the Blue Devils went on an 11-6 run to make it 20-14. Eckert closed the set out like he opened the sets, serving Lawrence Tech to a 25-16 set win to earn the programs second ever three-game winning streak.

The Blue Devils hit .255 from the attack while holding Goshen to a .053 hitting percentage. Ooms led the way for Lawrence Tech with 12 kills and a career high .346 hitting percentage on 26 attempts. Max Jewett hit a team high .444 with nine kills on 18 attacks with just one error.

This was the first game for Goshen as an affiliate member of the WHAC. Goshen is a full member of the Crossroads League, but because of low participation in that league for this sport, Goshen joined the WHAC as a men's volleyball member only. Tonight's match was their first official match as an NAIA program.

The Blue Devils return to the court on January 23 when they head to (RV) Siena Heights (Mich.) University for a 7 p.m. contest in Adrian, Mich.
