Blue Devils Fall 1-0 to Aquinas in Overtime Penalty Shot; Prepare for a trip to Cleary on Saturday

Box Score

Despite a close game, the Lawrence Technological University women's soccer team fell in an overtime thriller that ended with a penalty kick from the Aquinas Saints that found the back of the net. The Blue Devils fell 1-0 against the Saints at home, moving to 3-2-0 in the WHAC.

Aquinas (8-2-1, 3-1-0) came out strong in the first half, out-shooting the BLue Devils 4-2. Both teams remained aggressive throughout, fighting for possession. With such a close game, emotions got high for two players, one from LTU and one from AC that resulted in two red cards and an ejection in the first half. When emotions settled down, both teams kept pace with each other to end the half scoreless.

The second half opened scoreless again, with Aquinas again out-shooting the Blue Devils 6-3. Despite the back and forth play from both teams, neither team could get a shot on net, including two hits off post for both the Saints and the Blue Devils.

Going into overtime, which is two 10 minute halves with golden goal victory, the teams seemed perfectly matched again. However, less than three minutes into the first half, a penalty from LTU in the scoring area resulted in a penalty kick for the Saints. Sealing their fate, Olivia Borgdorff got the ball past Rebecca Almandoz up close and to the far left for the Saints to go home with the win.

Next up for the BLue Devils face Cleary University (Mich.) at Cleary on Friday, October 12th at 4:00 p.m.. Cleary (4-6-0, 1-3-0) comes into the match following a 2-1 loss to Lourdes University (Ohio).
