Box Score SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's basketball team made program history on Wednesday defeating No. 8 Cornerstone (Mich.) University 82-73 at Don Ridler Field House. It is the Blue Devils first win over a team ranked in the NAIA Top 25 and the first win over Cornerstone in program history.
Lawrence Tech (13-14, 8-10) trailed by 17 points, 51-34, just 3:32 into the second half, but a 15-0 run by the Blue Devils cut the lead to 51-49 with 12:11 remaining in the game. Ty Searles (SR/Pontiac, Mich.) scored nine of Lawrence Tech's 15 points during the run. Cornerstone went back up 61-56, but Devonte Myles (SR/Tampa, Fla.) scored five straight points, including a three to tie the game at 61-61 with 4:59 remaining in the game.
Alek Ivanovic (SO/Macomb, Mich.) put the Blue Devils up 63-61 to kick-start a 14-3 run and take a 75-64 lead with just under a minute remaining. Lawrence Tech closed the game going 9-for-12 from the line to secure their first win over a top 10 team in program history.
The Blue Devils opened the game with a 12-8 lead as Ivanovic hit three straight three-pointers. Isaiah Cumberland (FR/Columbus, Ohio) put the Blue Devils up 16-12 followed by a three from Searles to put LTU up 19-14 with 10:14 left in the half.
Cornerstone answered, tying the game at 21-21 before Searles gave the Blue Devils a 24-21 lead. The Golden Eagles once again responded with a 12-5 run to take a 33-26 lead with 4:17 on the clock. Ivanovic hit another three-pointer to make it 36-31, but Christian Rodriguez jumper at the buzzer put Cornerstone up 41-31 at the break.
The Blue Devils caught fire in the second half, hitting 64.3 percent of their field-goals, going 18-for-28. Searles went 9-for-11 from the field in the half, hitting 7-of-10 free-throws for 28 points. Myles added 18 points in the half, going 7-for-9 from the field including 2-for-2 from the line and from the arc. Lawrence Tech's defense held Cornerstone to 26.3 percent shooting in the second half as they shot 10-for-38.
Lawrence Tech finished the game shooting 50.9 percent including 37 rebounds, holding the No. 8 team in the NAIA Division II to 35.2 percent from the field causing 11 turnovers. Searles finished with 36 points and six rebounds while Myles added 22 points and 10 rebounds. Ivanovic finished with 14 points.
Lawrence Tech is back on the court Saturday, February 16 when they head to Lima, Ohio to face University of Northwestern Ohio at 3 p.m.
