HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's tennis team notched a 6-3 victory in its PTR Spring Tennisfest opener match against Stockton (N.J.) University at the Evian Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Lawrence Tech (6-5, 2-0) started with a two-point deficit after forfeiting doubles' third flight and court-six singles. The Blue Devils tied the match after winning first and second doubles flights. Sabrina Mateos (JR/Mexico City, Mexico) and Maria Vega-Hazas (FR/Santander, Spain) defeated Emily Steinberg and Maria Ibarra, 8-1. Samantha Kohn (SO/Dearborn, Mich.) and Samantha Weber (FR/Clarkston, Mich.) notched an 8-2 victory against Renee Wornowicz and Taylor Searles at court-two.
In singles action, Lawrence Tech won four flights, while Stockton (7-4, 4-2) took two. At court-one and three, Vega-Hazas and Weber notched a pair of double 6-0 victories against Ibarra and Wornowicz, respectively. Kohn defeated Brenna Samuels 6-1, 6-0 at fourth flight, while Mateos won 6-3, 6-2 at court-two. Maria Nicholls (FR/Shelby Township, Mich.) fell 6-0, 6-2 to Brooke Samuels at fifth flight.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Monday, March 11 against Berry (Ga.) College at 5:30 p.m. as they continue their participation at the PTR Spring Tennisfest in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
