Hockey struggles this weekend against Aquinas College face UM-Dearborn next

Box Score

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. This weekend the Lawrence Tech ACHA D1 hockey team looked to move ahead in the national standings after splitting the past weekend against Indiana Tech. The hockey team was going to need to bring their A-game to pull off the upset bid against Aquinas, who came into the weekend ranked 20th in the latest ACHA Top-25 poll. That wasn't though this weekend for the Blue Devils falling Friday, January 31, 2020, to the tune of 5-2. The Blue Devils would hit the road looking for redemption on Saturday night heading to Grand Rapids retooled and ready to go. Once again, though, the Blue Devils hit a brick wall against the Saints of Aquinas falling 8-2 on Saturday night at the Southside Ice Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Friday night, the energy was at an all-time high on both sides of the ice with big hits across the board. But Aquinas found the back of the net first coming at the 16:11 mark of the first period going up 1-0 on the Blue Devils. Goal two on the night for the Saints came in the 11:48 mark of the second period making it 2-0 over the Blue Devils. The Blue Devils responded at the 17:31 mark of the second period when senior Cole Therrien found the back of the net of the Alek Allen assist making it 2-1.

As the third period got underway it looked as if this game was going to be a battle of the puck falling in one's zone at just the right time. That seemed to be the case as Aquinas found the back of the net to go up 3-1 after a goal coming at the 9:41 mark of the third period. Another goal, from Aquinas, made it 4-1 coming at the 11:29 mark of the third period. With this game looking all but over for the Blue Devils, the Saints would back off a bit. However, the Blue Devils would put the pedal to the metal. Finding the back of the net at the 17:10 mark of the third period off a Cole Therrien goal his second of the night, the Blue Devils made it 4-2. Assists came from Bryce Ebert and Alec Allen. Aquinas would score one final time on the night coming at the 18:40 mark of the third period making it 5-2.

Saturday night, the Blue Devils looked to bounce back after being throttled at home 5-2 the previous night while also looking to get a top 25 win in back to back weekends. That was all but the case as the Blue Devils fell flat Saturday night in Grand Rapids, taking an 8-2 throttling on the road. The Blue Devils found the back of the net in the third period off a Cole Therrien assist the Hartland, Michigan native Blake Heier capitalized and put one in making it 6-1. The Blue Devils found the net again in the third period at the 7:02 mark with Brendan Preiss scoring off the Erik Engdahl assist making it 6-2. Aquinas would score two more times in the third period giving them the weekend series and the season sweep 3-1.

Looking ahead, the Blue Devils look to celebrate senior night on Friday, February 7, 2020, against conference foe UM-Dearborn. The puck is slated to drop at 5:45 pm at the Farmington Hills Ice Arena.
