Beavers' 31 Leads Blue Devils Past Spring Arbor

Spring Arbor, MI - The Lawrence Technological University Blue Devils men's basketball team was on the road against a solid non-conference opponent in Spring Arbor University who competes out of the Crossroads League. The Blue Devils were down 10 headed into the half, but Beavers' big second half helped them to victory by a final score of 72-64.

Brandon Beavers led all scorers with 31, with a big 25-point second half. Beavers also had a game-high 10 rebounds, with four assists and four steals. Gunnar Gustafson pitched in for 12 points, seven boards, six assists, and three blocks. 

Both teams started off the game trading baskets. A three-pointer from Austin Braun gave the Cougars a six-point lead halfway through the first half. A couple of possessions later, Carter Frantz was able to knock down a three-pointer of his own to bring the game back within three points, 16-13. 

Moments later, LTU was forced to call a timeout with 9:15 to go in the first half after Daniel Cluster hit a two-pointer to put the Cougars up five.

Coming out of the timeout, SAU went on another 5-0 run, but the Blue Devils fought back after back-to-back baskets from Beavers and Gustafson with seven minutes left in the half. 

With five minutes to go in the half, Alek Ivanovic hit a basket to cut the deficit to 29-21.

LTU would enter the half down 10, shooting the ball 44.8 percent from the field, and 20.0 percent from behind the arc. SAU shot 63.0 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from three.

In the second half, Beavers big second half started off by knocking down the first bucket of the half. 

With 15:13 left, back-to-back buckets from Beavers and Isaiah Cumberland cut the lead to 42-38.

SAU would miss their next couple of shots before Cumberland hit another big-time shot to cut the Cougars' lead to two.

LTU called timeout with 11:10 left in the second half, and Spring Arbor went on a little 5-0 run moments later. 

The lead was then cut to one 57-56 after a Beavers' made basket.

With 4:24 remaining, Frantz hit a big-time shot to put the Blue Devils up one to give them their first lead of the game at 60-59 since 10-8 with 13:39 in the first half. 

LTU would then take control of the lead after a Frantz basket. The Blue Devils' disciplined defense down the stretch helped them close the game out by only giving up three points to the Cougars in the last four minutes of play.

Beavers hit two huge baskets to extend their lead to 68-61 with 1:49 left.

After SAU went cold late in the game, they were forced to foul, and Beavers made all four free throws to clinch the victory. The Blue Devils outscored the Cougars 42-24 in the second half with help from Beavers' 25 second-half points.

LTU in the second-half shot 53 percent from the field, and 44.4 percent from behind the arc.

The Blue Devils (2-0) return to action against Indiana South Bend at home Saturday, October 30th at 4 PM inside the Don Ridler Fieldhouse.
