Long Leads Blue Devils to Victory

The Lawrence Technological University Blue Devils women's basketball team took on the Shawnee State Bears in the Siena Heights Thanksgiving Classic.

The Blue Devils came away with the 73-69 victory.

Maggie Long led all scorers with a career-high 24 points on 6-of-10 shooting from three. Kylee Batey added 14 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.

How it Happened:

1st Quarter:

  • Kam Elzy started the scoring with a three for the Bears
  • A Dominique Evans layup gave the Blue Devils their first lead at 6-5
  • Long's knocks down three triples, the latest giving the Blue Devils a 19-11 advantage
  • Jade Faris ended the scoring for the period with a layup
  • Lawrence Tech led after one, 24-17

2nd Quarter:

  • Elzy makes two freebies to open up the second quarter scoring
  • Addie Nagel's layup forced a SSU timeout
  • Aniyah Quow's three cut the deficit to 28-25, forcing an LTU timeout
  • Julia Huey's three starts a 11-5 run spanning four minutes
  • An Elzy jumper and Quow free throw gave the Bears a small 3-0 spurt to end the half
  • Lawrence Tech 39, Shawnee State 33

3rd Quarter:

  • Marnae Holland hit a layup to start the second half scoring
  • Batey and Holland trade layups, leading to an LTU timeout
  • Long's back-to-back threes extended the lead to eight 
  • Jazmine Davis and Quow layup cut the cushion to four, leading to an LTU timeout.
  • Following a timeout, the Blue Devils went on a 6-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes
  • Gracie Mitchell's jumper ended the scoring for the quarter
  • Blue Devils 55, Bears 46

4th Quarter:

  • Kevanika Brown's layup opened the fourth quarter scoring
  • Three more Bears layups, by way of Elzy, Holland and Anyia Pride gives
  • Evelyn Oktavec's three tied the game at 57
  • Davis' free throws gave the Bears the 65-63 lead
  • Huey and Long hit back-to-back triples to give the Blue Devils a 69-65 advantage
  • Four straight Elzy free throws brought the game within one, 70-69, in the final minute
  • Batey and Nagel close out the game making three free throws to reign LTU victorious

By The Numbers:

  • Shawnee State stayed in the game by forcing turnovers, scoring 35 points off 27 Lawrence Tech turnovers
  • Lawrence Tech held Shawnee State to 4-of-26 (15.4 percent) from downtown, while shooting 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) themselves

The Blue Devils (5-6) continue at the Siena Heights Thanksgiving Classic tomorrow, Sunday, November 28 where they face off against the Governors State Jaguars at 2 pm.
