Huey's Big Day Leads Blue Devils

Adrian, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological University Blue Devils took on the Governors State Jaguars as a part of the Siena Heights University Thanksgiving Classic Tournament. Lawrence Tech finished 2-0 in the tournament. Julia Huey and Kylee Batey were named to the All-Tournament Team. 

The Blue Devils used a big first quarter to defeat the Jaguars 64-57. Huey led the Blue Devils in scoring with 23 points, 12 of which came in the first, and four blocks. Jade Faris added 12 points and seven rebounds. Sharnita Breeze led the Jaguars in scoring, also with 23 points. 

How it happened:

1st Quarter:

  • Huey starts off the scoring with a layup off the tip-off
  • Breeze free throws and traded layups by Dominique Evans and Trinity Sims tie it at four apiece
  • LTU goes on a 6-0 run spanning a little over two minutes
  • Two minutes later, the Jaguars cut the deficit to three
  • The Blue Devils raced to a 13-2 spurt over the next two minutes to make the score 25-11
  • Huey's third triple of the quarter ends the first quarter scoring
  • Lawrence Tech led 28-13 after one

2nd Quarter:

  • Lotte Miller's free throws start the second quarter scoring
  • Evans layup extends the advantage back to 15 for the Blue Devils
  • A Kennedy Weigt layup followed by a Trinity Sims jumper forced an LTU timeout midway through the second
  • Batey hit a couple of free throws out of the timeout, making the score 35-21
  • Batey and Breeze trade layups in the final minute to end the scoring for the half
  • Lawrence Tech carried a 39-26 advantage into the locker room

3rd Quarter:

  • Nine unanswered Blue Devil points across the first three-and-a-half minutes led to a GSU timeout
  • Weigt and Justice Crooks jumpers forced an LTU timeout to nip the run in the bud
  • Out of the LTU timeout, the Jaguars continued on what ended up being eight points in-a-row
  • Addie Nagel broke the Jaguars scoring streak to extend the Blue Devil lead back up to 14
  • Miller's two free throws would end the third quarter scoring
  • After three, the Blue Devils held a 50-40 lead

4th Quarter:

  • Huey's two freebies, followed by a three kicked off the scoring in the final period
  • Nagel's layup made it seven straight to start the fourth
  • Breeze layup forces an LTU timeout
  • Brenna Bartlett hit a layup following the timeout
  • Angelique Cowan and Crooks team up for a 6-0 run, prompting another LTU timeout
  • Faris' layup would get the advantage back to double-digits, at 61-50
  • Crooks' layup with 31 seconds remaining made the score 61-53, leading to an LTU timeout
  • Miller's layup with 10 seconds left shrunk the Jaguar deficit to just six
  • Nagel and Evans ice the game with three made free throws
  • Blue Devils defeat Jaguars 64-57

By The Numbers

  • The Blue Devils shot 11-17 (64.7 percent) in the first quarter to lead to a wire-to-wire victory
  • Huey's six threes mark the second time this weekend a Blue Devil made at least six threes (Maggie Long, 11/27/21) and the second time this season where she reached six threes (seven, 11/6/21)
  • Huey has also now recorded a block in 11 straight games

The Blue Devils (6-6; 3-2) return home to face Lourdes for a conference matchup on Wednesday, December 1 at 5:30 pm.
