Box Score Livonia, MI - The 7-seeded Lawrence Technological University Blue Devils women's soccer team took on the 2-seeded Madonna Crusaders in the quarterfinals of the WHAC Tournament.
The teams got off to a quick start, as Lauren Wasiak launched a shot that was saved by Alex Thomas in the first minute. Madonna answered back with three shots in the next eight minutes of play.
The pace slowed down a bit, with only four shots coming between the 15th minute and the 40th minute, but in the 42nd minute, Morgan Stack set up Abby Werthman to break the scoreless draw right before the half.
In the second half, Madonna controlled the first 30 minutes, taking eight shots to Lawrence Tech's zero. However, the tide would change when DiOnna Hill's perseverance paid off, scoring off her own blocked shot, to tie the game in the 77th minute.
The Blue Devils finally had a little bit of momentum. The Crusaders tried to steal it back, taking shots in the 78th, 86th, and 89th minutes respectively, with nothing coming from them.
Lawrence Tech also tried to break the deadlock with a DiOnna Hill shot in the 81st and a Jenny Dear shot in the 90th minute, to no avail.
In overtime, the Crusaders got a shot off in the 96th minute, but outside of that, the teams were jostling to take control in their offensive zone.
In the second overtime period, the Blue Devils were more aggressive. Hill's shot was blocked but retained by Lawrence Tech. Mikayla Waranauckas took the following corner kick and deposited it into the box for the header by Jaiden Konrad to give the Blue Devils the upset adding to Konrad's already stellar week.
This was Lawrence Tech's first victory against Madonna since the program's rebirth in 2012.
This is the second time (2019, as a 6-seed) in the past three seasons that the Blue Devils have advanced to the conference semifinal.
The Blue Devils will continue their run on the road against the 3-seeded UNOH Racers on Saturday, November 6th at 11:00 a.m.
