Baseball Splits Sunday with Aquinas

DETROIT, Mich.- Baseball was finally back in action after a delayed start to the 2021 season due to a plethora of issues in the early part of February. The Blue Devils, originally slated to play in Indiana this weekend against Aquinas, moved the games back to Michigan. From there, the games slated for Saturday were postponed until Monday afternoon, citing below the temperature standards set forth by the conference.

Game 1 |

A pitcher's duel ensued on Sunday afternoon in Detroit, with the Blue Devils putting Alek Wietrzykowski on bump going up against Hill for Aquinas.

Wietrzykowski went 3 innings walking one and getting 5 strikeouts Sunday. Kent Maddick came into the game for relief, pitching 2 innings and getting 3 strikeouts. Kyle Hennessey also hit the bump for an inning of relief, giving up 2 earned runs, including a home run, and getting a strikeout. Jake Llaneza was the final pitcher for the Blue Devils walking one, giving up a run, and getting 2 strikeouts.

Overall the Blue Devils had 3 hits, 3 walks, 7 strikeouts, and left 7 on base Sunday in game one. All three runs for Aquinas came in the sixth and seventh inning of the game one Sunday.

Game 2 |

A quick onslaught of offense by both sides to start game 2 continued for the next three innings for the Blue Devils, who scored 4 runs off 8 hits and 2 errors on Sunday. Starting Game Two for the Blue Devils was Jay Gallant while Ben Snider was on the mound for the Saints.

Gallant went 4 innings, giving up 2 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Harvey Freed came into the game in relief, giving up 1 hit and grabbing a strikeout. Sam DeKuiper came in for 1.2 innings giving up 2 hits, 1 run, 1 earned, and grabbing 2 strikeouts. Jake Llaneza earned the save with a walk and strikeout. The Blue Devils pitching staff gave up 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned, 3 walks, and 8 strikeouts.

Luke Morrissette Blasted one over the right-field fence in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Two Blue Devils grabbed doubles on the day in Nick Allen and Nick Post. Meanwhile, Sam DeKuiper, Kellen Harding, Nick Post, and Luke Morrissette all had RBI's.

Looking ahead, the Blue Devils head back to Detroit to take on Aquinas in non-conference doubleheader action Monday afternoon. First pitch is set for 4:30 pm at the Corner Ballpark in Detroit, Michigan.
