Box Score Southfield, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological University men's basketball team hosted the Racers of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday afternoon. After a high-scoring first half, the Blue Devils were up big entering the locker room and managed to keep the lead until the final buzzer, which ended in a score of 86-64.
Brandon Beavers led all scorers with 26 points, seven assists, and four rebounds. Beavers has racked up double-digit scoring performances in 20 of his last 21 games. Alek Ivanovic added 17 points and four boards. Gunnar Gustafson pitched in a double-double recording 12 points and 11 rebounds. Isaiah Cumberland and Carter Frantz both combined for 22 points. All five Blue Devils starters were in double figures in this one.
Cumberland started off the scoring for LTU with his made layup.
There were five lead changes in the first five minutes of action as both teams continued to trade buckets.
With 9:50 left in the first half, a Frantz pull-up jumper and an Andrew Rinn three-ball gave LTU a 23-18 lead.
Biggz Johnson's back-to-back buckets brought the Racers back within one point with just under seven minutes to go in the half.
Beavers and Ivanovic got open on the perimeter to knock down back-to-back triples making it 38-33.
After a couple of defensive stops by the Blue Devils, LTU came back down on offense with 1:10 remaining, and Beavers drained another three extending the lead to double digits.
With seconds remaining before the half, Cumberland's pull-up jumper as time expired gave the Blue Devils momentum heading into the half up 48-34.
The team shot the ball 17-of-29 (58.6%) from the field, 8-of-13 (61.5%) from behind the arc, and 6-of-9 (66.7%) from the line.
Ben Westrick started the scoring for the Racers to start the second half.
The Blue Devils could not buy a basket in the opening five minutes of play.
A Beavers driving layup with 13:22 to play gave LTU a 56-45 lead.
Minutes later, Frantz and Beavers found an open Ivanovic on back-to-back possessions connecting on two three-pointers. The Blue Devils lead was 62-47.
A mix of free throws by Gustafson and Beavers extended their lead to 21 with 10:15 left.
At the 8:27 mark in the second half, Beavers and Ivanovic secured back-to-back three-pointers again making it 74-50.
Alek Cluff's And-1 made it 76-55.
With just under five minutes to play, Gustafson and Beavers made two layups to stretch their lead to 80-59.
In the final five minutes, the Blue Devils would maintain the lead and wind the clock down to finish this game by a final score of 86-64.
LTU shot the ball 31-of-59 (52.5%) from the field, 14-of-29 (48.3%) from deep, and 10-of-13 (76.9%) from the line.
The next Blue Devils matchup is on the road Wednesday night, February 2nd when they travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan to play against Cornerstone University. This game will tip-off at 7:30 PM.
