Defense on Display in Loss to #5 IWU

Box Score SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological University football team pulled within 21-14 of #5 Indiana Wesleyan University after trailing 14-0 at the half, but were unable to complete the comeback, falling 35-14 on Saturday afternoon.

First Half:
  • After an LTU turnover on its opening possession, IWU drove  90-yards in 7-plays, capped off by a 20-yard TD scamper to go up 7-0.
  • Defense was on display as the teams traded punts late into the second quarter.
  • IWU capitalized on good field possession at the LTU 38 with 4:17 left until halftime, running one in from 13 yards out to double the advantage to 14-0 at the break.
Second Half:
  • The LTU defense forced a punt on the first possession of the second half.
  • The offense used a 68-yard completion to Jaden Rembert, off a deflection, to get the ball down to the IWU 4.
  • Two plays later, Tyler Kulka hit Jalen Wallace on a 4-yard out to cut the margin in half, 14-7, four minutes into the third quarter.
  • IWU responded quickly by moving the ball 77-yards in 3:09, finishing it off with another touchdown run to extend the lead back to two touchdowns.
  • This time LTU answered, due in part to a pair of big plays to tight ends CJ Thompson (28 yards) and Mauricio Jenkins (24 yards) as Kulka connected with Rembert on a 6-yard fade to trim the score to 21-14 IWU with 4:33 to go in the third.
  • The LTU defense forced a timely 3 & Out but Kulka was intercepted on the pursuing drive, but IWU missed a 44-yard field goal on the first possession of the fourth to keep it a one score ballgame.
  • LTU was forced to punt and a big IWU return setup a 31-yard TD strike to double the advantage to 14, 28-14, with remaining in the contest.
  • Following a Blue Devils punt, he Wildcats added a 1-yard TD plunge on their way to icing a 35-14 victory.
