Lake Wales, Fla. - The Lawrence Technological Blue Devils baseball team traveled to Lake Wales to take participate in the Warner invitational tournament. They dropped both games, losing 15-2 to (RV) Concordia (Neb.) and the second game to #11 St. Thomas (Fla.) 2-0.
Game 1 vs. RV Concordia:
- Jay Gallant got the start for the Blue Devils, he pitched two innings, giving up eight runs (all earned) on six hits, four walks and a hit batsman, striking out two.
- Concordia jumped out ahead early when Jayden Adams hit a deep fly to right center, giving them a 1-0 lead
- The Blue Devils would answer back in the second with Trent Reed tripling in Jackson Walkowiak, tying the game at one apiece
- A walk-wild pitch and an RBI groundout gave the Bulldogs a two-run lead
- In the third, back-to-back-to-back solo homers extended the Concordia lead to 6-1
- They would tack on three more runs in the third to take a 9-1 lead
- The rest of Concordia's runs were scored on home runs: two 2-run homers and two solo shots
- Walkowiak would homer in the top of the sixth, to cut into the lead to 14-2
- The Blue Devils would go quietly in the seventh
- Gallant (0-1) was handed the loss
Game 2 vs #11 St. Thomas:
- Alek Wietrykowski took the bump for the Blue Devils pitching a complete game, giving up two runs (both earned) on five hits and two walks, striking out one in the process
- St. Thomas started early, scoring a run in the first when Robin Fernandez singled in Chris Schoeller.
- The Blue Devils threatened to answer in the first with Luke Morrissette and Nathan Brown on first and second respectively before Walkowiak grounding into a double play to end the inning
- In the fifth, Joey Thompson would score on a wild pitch to double the Bobcats lead to two
- The Blue Devils would have a couple of chances with Nick Post on second, but would fail to deliver.
- Wietryzkowski (1-2) was tagged with the tough-luck loss despite how well he pitched
The Blue Devils (4-9) return to action on Friday, March 11 at 10 am when they take on #10 Bellevue, followed by Calumet College of St. Joseph at 2:30 pm.
