Livonia, MI - The Lawrence Technological University softball team played a doubleheader on Wednesday evening against #14 Aquinas College. In game one, the Blue Devils gave up three runs in the first inning and could not come back as they lost 12-5. Game two was a pitching duel, but LTU came up just short by a final score of 4-2.
How It Happened: Game Two - LTU 5, AQ 12
- The Saints scored three runs in the top of the first off four walks and one hit.
- After a lead off triple by Sarah Hige, Larissa Mercado was able to reach base on fielder's choice to bring home a sliding Hige.
- In the top of the second, Stafford and Roberts drove in three more runs.
- Aquinas would extend their lead to 10-1 in the top of the third.
- Morgan James and Lily Morrissette both drove in a run in the bottom half of the inning to close the lead to 10-3.
- The Saints extended their lead off an RBI single in the fourth, and a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
- A late rally in the fifth by the Blue Devils started by an RBI double to left center by James.
- Lauren Lanphear hopped on board and brought home Callie Tatum off her single.
- The Blue Devils could not capitalize in the sixth and seventh inning as they dropped game one 12-5.
By The Numbers:
- Tatum went 3-for-4 win one run.
- Hige, Lanphear, and Morrissette all went 2-for-4, Hige with a run.
- James drove in two RBI, and Mazie Lawler and Lanphear both drove in a run.
Gloriana Su'a got the start giving up 10 runs in 3 innings on five hits. Su'a struck out three batters.
Grace Schriber came in for Su'a and gave up four hits on two runs. Schriber struck out two batters.
How It Happened: Game Two - LTU 2, AQ 4
- A Humitz double in the first started the scoring for AQ.
- LTU was held scoreless in the first and second on one hit.
- The Saints scored two more runs in the top half of the third.
- A homer to left field extended the lead for Aquinas to 4-0 in the fourth.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Lawler tripled to left field, Morrissette was hit by a pitch then stole second, and Hige came up and drove in Lawler after her fly out to center.
- Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth inning.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Hige drove in a run on a fielder's choice but was not enough as LTU came up short by a final score of 4-2.
By The Numbers:
- Tatum went 2-for-3Â
- Fife and Lawler both went 1-for-3 with a run.
- Hige drove in two.
Clover Brandt was on the mound and went the distance giving up four runs on six hits. Brandt struck out four batters.
The Blue Devils are back on the diamond Saturday, April 23rd when they travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan to play Concordia University. Game one will start at 1 PM.
