SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological University football team held a 6-3 halftime lead in their season opener but a strong second half by the Taylor University Trojans allowed them to head home with a 27-12 road win on Saturday night.
First Half
- The teams each fumbled on their first possessions before exchanging punts in a scoreless first quarter
- A DeMarcus Bush forced fumble gave LTU the ball on Taylor's 32, and three plays later Tyler Kulka found CJ Thompson for a 17-yd TD pass
- After an LTU punt, Taylor drove it to the LTU 1-yard line but a 3-yd TFL by Mitch Waters left the Trojans to settle for a field goal as time expired with LTU ahead 6-3.
Second Half:
- The Trojans began the third with another field goal drive before the Blue Devils' 9-play possession was thwarted by a low shotgun snap, that resulted in a 22-yard loss as LTU once again had to punt.
- On the next play, the Trojans running back broke free for a 64-yard run down to the LTU 1-yd line before punching one in from 4 yards out to go ahead 13-6.
- LTU moved the ball to midfield on its next possession but turned the ball over on downs after an unsuccessful 4th & 8.
- After a first down pass interference on LTU, the Taylor back scampered for a 35-yard TD run to open up a two-touchdown lead, 20-6.
- LTU began the next drive with a Kulka 38-yard pass to Jaden Rembert to get inside Taylor territory at the 45. But after three incompletions, the Blue Devils turned the ball over after a 4th & 10 sack at midfield.
- Taylor capitalized on the short field as it ran the ball the rest of the way for another TD score to go up 27-6.
- LTU fought till the end with a 12-play drive that culminated in a 14-yd TD strike to Thompson for his second score of the night with 1:33 left as the Trojans ran out the clock for a 27-12 victory.
