Football Flummoxed at Saint Francis (Indiana) in MSFA Mideast League Play

The Blue Devils fall 56-7 to the Cougars

Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind.--Host Saint Francis (Indiana) rolled up 559 yards of total offense and recorded 29 first downs en route to a 56-7 Mid-States Football Association Mideast League victory over Lawrence Tech at Bishop John M. D'Arcy Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The USF Cougars up their overall record to 4-2 (3-0 in the MSFA Mideast), while the LTU Blue Devils drop to 1-6 overall (0-4 MSFA Mideast).

How it Happened
  • The Cougars jumped out to leads of 14-0 after the first quarter and 28-0 at halftime.
  • Lawrence Tech got its lone score in memorable fashion with a 1 minute and 57 seconds left in the game when Tyler Garrett caught a 99-yard touchdown pass from Alex Osman for what is believed to be the longest play in school history.
  • Saint Francis (Indiana) found the end zone on its first possession as O'Vauntay Vickers was on the receiving end of a 27-yard TD toss from Grant Gremel with 10 minutes and 45 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, capping a six-play, 58-yard drive in 2:01.

  • Vickers had three receptions for 100 yards and a pair of TDs.
  • Drew Wheat rushed two times for 78 yards, including a 76-yard TD run.
  • Gremel passed for 163 yards and four TDs on nine completions in limited duty.
  • Nate Talhelm led the defense that limited LTU to 229 offensive yards and 12 first downs with seven tackles (3 solo), including a sack (8 yards) and two for loss (13.5).
Beyond the Boxscore
  • Davidson now has 1,084 rushing yards in his 31-game career to extend his all-time school benchmark.
  • Vincent Robison became the last MSFA kicker this season to miss a point-after or field goal attempt with a minimum of 10 tries. He was 13-for-13 with four field goals and nine PATs heading into today before he missed a 35-yard attempt in the third quarter.
  • The all-time series is now tied 2-2, with the Cougars losing in the previous two meetings.
  • The USF Cougars have won two NAIA national football championships in 2016 and 2017.
  • Rembert 1,442 now has 103 catches for 1,498 yards in his career--figures that are both third in LTU all-time annals.
Next Saturday, Lawrence Tech travels to Adrian, Mich., where it will play MSFA Mideast foe Siena Heights at O'Laughlin Stadium for a noon kickoff.
