Big Fourth Quarter Thwarts Aquinas Comeback Bid in Women's Hoops WHAC Win

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--Senior Jade Faris recorded a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, and sophomore Kate Jacobs matched Faris with a team-high 17 points, to lead the Lawrence Tech women's basketball team to a 77-62 victory Saturday over Aquinas College at the Sturrus Center on Coach "Bo" Court. The visiting Blue Devils snapped a three-game losing skid to improve to 3-6 on the season and 3-4 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, while the Saints drop to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the WHAC.

Lawrence Tech Highlights
  • Jacobs made seven of 13 field goal attempts and added eight rebounds, while Faris went 7-for-12 from the field, led the team with three assists and had a game-best three steals.
  • Senior Dominique Evans scored 15 points on 6-for-9 field goal shooting, grabbed four rebounds and had two steals before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
  • Sophomore Gracie Bobo came off the bench to chip in 12 points.
Aquinas Highlights
  • Alona Blackwell led all student-athletes with 22 points, two blocked shots and four assists while playing all 40 minutes. She also led the squad with seven rebounds.
  • Ciara Hardy went 8-for-15 from the field to score 19 points.
  • Paige Guernsey added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
How it Happened 
  • Aquinas outscored LTU 30-15 in the third quarter to pull within 60-55 at the start of the fourth, but the Blue Devils outscored the Saints, 17-7, over the last 10 minutes of the game to preserve the win.
  • Lawrence Tech, which never trailed, built as much as a 20-point cushion in the third quarter after Faris made a layin to make it 47-27 with 8 minutes and 35 seconds left.
  • The Saints cut it to three at 58-55 with 26 seconds remaining on a layup by Hardy, who scored 14 points in the third alone to help AQ get back in the game. Aquinas shot 63.2 percent (12-19) from the field and held LTU to a 36.8 clip (7-19) in the third quarter.
  • Lawrence Tech, however, wouldn't break and brought the defense by holding AQ to 20.0 percent from the field (2-10) and forcing five turnovers.
  • Bobo--with six points--scored almost as many as the AQ team (7) in the fourth quarter to help LTU keep the lead intact.
  • The Blue Devils also enjoyed key statistical advantages in rebounding (38-31), points in the paint (40-26), points off turnovers (23-12) and bench points (20-0).
  • Lawrence Tech jumped out to a 28-16 lead after the first quarter while making 56.3 percent from the field (9-16).
Beyond the Boxscore
  • Lawrence Tech has allowed just one opponent (Indiana Tech) this season to shoot 50 percent or better from the field.
  • Faris' 17 rebounds are a career high and she also notched her first-ever double-double with the Blue Devils.
  • The Blue Devils' 77 points are the most scored in a game this season.
  • Blackwell is the WHAC's leading scorer with 25.9 points per game.
  • Jacobs ranks third in the WHAC with a .526 field goal shooting percentage.
  • Bobo tops the conference in three-point field goal efficiency at 54.8 percent after making 3 of 6 beyond the arc this afternoon.
