SOUTHFIELD--The Lawrence Tech football team scored on its opening drive, but the Blue Devils were unable to keep the momentum in a 56-7 loss at the hands of Indiana Wesleyan in a Mid-States Football Association Mideast League opener for both schools. The visiting Wildcats are ranked fifth in the NAIA preseason poll.
Blue Devils Highlights:
- Dual-threat quarterback Kaleb Garner led LTU 41 yards rushing on nine attempts and was 7-for-16 passing with 90 yards and a touchdown.
- CJ Davidson rushed for 32 yards to give him 650 for his career--breaking Tanner Foley's school record of 642 set from 2018 to 2019.
- Jalen Wallace led all receivers with six catches for 52 yards.
- Michael White paced the defense with eight stops including two solo tackles.
Wildcats Highlights:
- Dederrian Williams rushed for 126 yards on 16 carries and two TDs. Williams also had four receptions--including a pair of TDs--for 55 yards.
- Clayton Mosher had 10 tackles including three solo.
- Xander Stokes threw for 241 yards on 16 completions and three TDs.
How it Happened:
- The Blue Devils took the opening kickoff and marched down the field to get on the scoreboard first. D'Vaun Bentley caught a 19-yard pass from Garner to complete a nine-play scoring drive in 79 yards in 5 minutes and 4 seconds of time of possession.
- With LTU leading 7-0 in the second quarter, IWU tied it up with a Stokes to Levi Tidwell 16-yard TD pass with 14:56 left.
- The Wildcats took the lead for good on LTU's ensuing possession as Neil Campbell had a 10-yard fumble TD return, making it 14-7 43 seconds later.
- Indiana Wesleyan led 28-7 at halftime.
Lawrence Tech is back in action next Saturday when it hosts non-conference opponent Ave Maria University at home for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Blue Devils Stadium.
