Box Score CANTON, Mich.--Sophomore Drake Barnish scored two goals, including the clincher on an empty-net, and classmate Brett Tome turned aside 25 of 26 shots he faced as the Lawrence Tech men's hockey team opened the 2024 portion of its schedule with a 3-1 victory Friday over host Concordia (Michigan) in Wolverine–Hoosier Athletic Conference play at Arctic Edge.

The Blue Devils improve to 11-8 overall and 10-5 in the WHAC, while the Cardinals dip to 8-10-1 on the season and 5-10 in the conference.

  • Tyler Bieniek scored CUAA's lone goal.
  • Ethan Lindle and Chase Temple tied Bieniek for the team lead with four shots on goal.

How it Happened
  • After the teams skated to a scoreless first period, LTU broke through in the second with 7 minutes and 44 seconds remaining. Bland won an offensive zone face-off at the right dot and shoved the puck to sophomore Ian Kuntz, who found Hubenschmidt open in front for the first goal of the night.
  • Barnish scored an insurance goal with LTU on the power play midway through the third period. Sophomore defenseman Joey Mattevi passed down to classmate Maximus Nguyen along the left wing boards where Nguyen sent the puck across the ice to Barnish at the right goalpost.
  • The Cardinals spoiled the shutout bid at the 17:38 mark of the third period while on the power play. Zane Rydel was credited with an assist on Bieniek's goal that cut the Blue Devils lead in half, 2-1.
  • Janis was pulled a couple times during the final 3 minutes in favor of an extra attacker, but the Cardinals were denied the equalizer to send the contest to overtime. Barnish scored an empty-net goal with 79 seconds left to ice the win.
  • Lawrence Tech outshot Concordia (Michigan), 30-25, and dominated the Cardinals on face-offs, 37-23.

  • Barnish tops LTU with 16 goals and 24 points on the season.
  • Lawrence Tech had been idle since December 9.
  • Since Nov. 12, 2021, LTU has won 10 of the last 12 meetings including 6-0 on the Cardinals' home ice.
