Men's Volleyball Concludes Bethel University Invitational Play with 3-0 Record

The Blue Devils defeated Rio Grande (Ohio), 3-0, and Calumet College of St. Joseph, 3-1, on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MISHAWAKA, Ind--The Lawrence Tech men's volleyball team completed the Bethel University (Ind.) Invitational on Saturday with non-conference victories against Rio Grande, 28-26, 25-17, 25-21, and Calumet College of St. Joseph, 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, in Gates Gymnasium. The Blue Devils have won three matches in a row to improve to 4-1 on season, while the Storm are 1-6 and Crimson Wave stand at 7-5 overall.

Lawrence Tech Highlights/Rio Grande Match
  • Freshmen Gustavo Machado (.379 attack percentage) and Mario Cid paved the way with a match-high 16 and seven kills, respectively. The former also four total blocks, while the latter had 11 digs. (The Rio Grande had 13 digs as a team.)
  • The Blue Devils outhit the Storm .247 to .155, including a .318-.048 edge in the second set to gain momentum.
  • Lawrence Tech stormed back from a 17-9 deficit in the opening set to win by two points and lead the match 1-0.
  • The Blue Devils dominated defensively in digs (28-13) and team blocks (11-2), with sophomore Akram Askoul helping in the latter department with seven total blocks.
  • Lawrence Tech leads the all-time series 3-0.
Lawrence Tech Highlights/Calumet College Match
  • Juniors Brendon Down (match-high 16 kills, .233) and junior Jeffry Fuhrmann (13 kills, .417) led the offense.
  • The Blue Devils outhit the Crimson Wave .278 to .110, including .480 to .200 in the decisive fourth set. 
  • Cid added to LTU's cause with eight kills (.412) and five blocks, while junior Connor Cooper added a match-best eight blocks and eight kills.
  • Lawrence Tech also held statistical advantages in kills (56-46) and team blocks (11-6).
  • Freshmen Pedro Aguiar and Nathaniel Brownlee each had 22 assists for a career high to lead all playmakers.
  • Daniel Lopez led the Crimson Wave with 14 kills on a .435 attack percentage, followed by Francis Hauze with 13 kills and Pedro Castillo, 10.
  • Calumet was predicted to finish in second place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
  • This signaled the first meeting between the teams.
Up next, Lawrence Tech will have its Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference home openers on back-to-back nights against nationally-ranked foes Lourdes on Friday and Indiana Tech on Saturday at the Don Ridler Field House. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. starts.
