Baseball Splits Day Two at Warner Invitational, Sets Up Rematch with Warner

LAKE WALES, FLA -- The Lawrence Technological University Baseball team traveled to Lake Wales to take on day two of the Warner University Invitational Tournament. The teams they faced today were Warner and #8 Cumberlands, at Warner's field.

Game 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Warner scored in the top of the first on an error, walk, single combination
  • The Blue Devils answered back in the bottom of the inning with 8 runs
  • Following a long first inning, both teams cruised through the next 5 innings, where only 4 hits were allowed
  • Warner tried to rally in the seventh, scoring on a double with runners on first and second with two outs
NOTES:
  • Kenny Wright started and pitched a 7 IP, allowing 2 runs (one earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5. He earned his first victory of the season, and the first complete game by a Blue Devil this season
  • Every Blue Devil that saw a plate appearance reached in some capacity
Game 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Cumberlands got on the scoreboard in the second inning on a two-out single to center
  • The Patriots added a run in the third on a wild pitch
  • A single to left tacked on a third run in the fourth for Cumberlands
  • It wasn't until the sixth that the Blue Devils could crack Cumberlands' starter Cesar Avila, as a Jake Llaneza walk followed by a Jason Erhardt double set up Zach Meier's single to center, plating them both
  •  A homer to left for Cumberlands added on 3 insurance runs in the seventh
  • The Blue Devils went quietly in the seventh to close the game out
NOTES:
  • Jake Llaneza started and pitched 2 IP, allowing 1 run (earned) on 2 hits and 1 walks, striking out none. He was tagged with his first loss of the season.
  • Kent Madak and Nick McCormick each pitched a scoreless inning in relief
The Blue Devils take on Warner at Warner Royals' Field tomorrow at 11:30a for the final day at the Warner Invitational, and the end of the Spring Break trip.
