Box Score SYLVANIA, Ohio--The Lawrence Tech men's volleyball team went on the road Friday night and defeated Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference leader No. 13-ranked Lourdes 25-16, 28-26, 22-25, 25-20 at the Ebeid Recreation Center, dropping the Gray Wolves to 14-8 overall and 14-1 officially in the WHAC.
Freshman
Gustavo Machado led a balanced LTU attack with 18 kills (.286), followed by redshirt junior
Brendon Down with 16, freshman
Mario Cid spiked 12 (.440) and sophomore
Akram Askoul had nine (.440). Reigning WHAC Setter of the Week
Nathaniel Brownlee and Down added to the offense with match highs of 49 assists and four service aces, respectively.
Eduardo Ayala led Lourdes with a match-high 22 kills (.273) and Vinicius Lopes, 10 (.200).
Lawrence Tech blistered a .406 hitting percentage while holding Lourdes to .176 to take the opening set by nine points.
The Blue Devils went up 2-0 as the Gray Wolves saved two set points before Cid reeled off three kills in a row to close the second set by two points.
Both offenses struggled in the third set when Lourdes cut into the lead 2-1 after LTU hit just .080 and the home team went .179.
But LTU regrouped in the decisive fourth set by jumping out to leads of 6-2, 14-7 and 16-10. The Gray Wolves used a 6-0 scoring run to tie it 16-16 on two Lopes kills and a pair of LTU attack errors. The Blue Devils, however, responded with three consecutive points to take the lead 19-16 and they wouldn't look back. A Gray Wolves hitting error and Askoul termination sealed the victory.
Graduate student
Matheus Andrade spearheaded a LTU defense that produced 22 more points than Lourdes with a match-best 21 digs for a LTU career high. Cid posted 11 and Down turned aside four total blocks.
The Gray Wolves defense was led by Brayden Moyars with 17 digs, followed by Lopes' 14. The Blue Devils also led in team blocks (10-3) and digs (57-49).
For the match, LTU outhit Lourdes .312 to .209 and had 14 more kills (63-49).
Lawrence Tech travels to Fort Wayne, Ind., tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. for a WHAC match at Indiana Tech, which is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 15.
