SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The Lawrence Tech Blue Devils faced a challenging two-game series against Cleary University, ultimately dropping both contests due to late-game scoring surges from the Cougars. In the series opener on Friday night at Redford Ice Arena, LTU showed resilience by matching Cleary goal-for-goal through the first two periods. The Blue Devils first struck on the power play with a goal from
Kaden Hemme (assisted by
Kevin Bond and
Nick Twombley) in the first period, and
Adrian Gonzalez-Marin found the back of the net in the second (assisted by
Bryce Iott and
Kevin Bond), keeping the game tied 2-2 heading into the final frame. However, Cleary dominated the third period, scoring three unanswered goals—including an empty-netter—to secure the 5-2 victory, despite a solid 31-save performance from LTU goalie
Brett Tome.
Saturday's rematch saw the Blue Devils fall 6-3 on the road, but not before showing a spirited fight in the third period. After trailing 2-1 following Cleary's second-period power-play tally, LTU saw the Cougars extend their lead early in the third. Lawrence Tech refused to quit, mounting a quick two-goal flurry with tallies from Dylan Magdich (assisted by Nick Twombley) and Zane Irion (assisted by Dylan Magdich) just 46 seconds apart to narrow the gap to 4-3 midway through the period. Unfortunately, Cleary responded with two late empty-net goals and a shorthanded goal to seal the 6-3 final. Offensive contributions throughout the weekend were led by Adrian Gonzalez-Marin, who netted two goals in the series, and Kevin Bond, Nick Twombley, and Dylan Magdich, who each provided valuable assists.
The Blue Devils are currently 6-5-0, with a 4-5-0 conference record in a tough WHAC Conference. They will look to bounce back in their next matchup against Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
