SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Lawrence Tech could not overcome a slow shooting night against nationally ranked Indiana Tech on Wednesday, falling 68-37 in a WHAC contest at Don Ridler Fieldhouse.
Indiana Tech, ranked No. 24, seized control with timely 3-point shooting at the end of quarters and a decisive third-quarter surge, outscoring the Blue Devils 20-13 in the frame to stretch a 12-point halftime lead into a 50-29 advantage. The Warriors hit 10 3-pointers overall and closed the first and third quarters with back-breaking shots in the final seconds to keep momentum on the visitors' side.
Lawrence Tech stayed within reach early, trailing just 16-9 after the opening quarter despite a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Indiana Tech guard Taylor Covington. The Blue Devils continued to defend the paint effectively and battled on the glass, finishing with 33 rebounds to Indiana Tech's 37, but struggled to convert offensively. Lawrence Tech shot 26.9 percent from the field (14-for-52) and 2-for-18 from beyond the arc while the Warriors steadily built a 30-16 halftime lead.
The Blue Devils' most productive stretch came in the third quarter, when they totaled 13 points and found more rhythm attacking the rim. LaChelle Moreland-Jones provided a consistent scoring spark, and Lawrence Tech generated 24 points in the paint to match Indiana Tech in that category. However, each time the Blue Devils threatened to cut into the deficit, the Warriors answered from the perimeter, capped by a Covington fastbreak 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the third to make it 50-29.
Moreland-Jones led Lawrence Tech with 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting, adding five rebounds and a pair of free throws in 28 minutes. Forward Kate Jacobs nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds while going 3-for-4 at the line. The Blue Devils also received contributions on the glass throughout the lineup, helping Lawrence Tech stay competitive in rebounding against a strong Indiana Tech frontcourt.
Indiana Tech's offensive balance ultimately proved to be the difference. Covington paced the visitors with a game-high 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, shooting 9-for-20 from the field and 3-for-8 from distance. Jaidyn Gulley added 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting with seven rebounds, and the Warriors finished at 42.2 percent from the floor, including 38.5 percent from 3-point range, while turning 10 turnovers and nine steals into 22 points off turnovers and 16 fastbreak points.
Despite the loss, Lawrence Tech continued to show effort on the defensive end and on the boards against one of the WHAC's top teams. The Blue Devils will look to build on their interior scoring and rebounding as conference play continues, with upcoming league matchups at Don Ridler Fieldhouse presenting opportunities to regroup and respond.
