Blue Devils Take 2 of 3 Against The Golden Bears

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 HUNINGTON, W. Va. - In game one Lawrence Tech struck first but could not hold the lead, as WVU Tech used a decisive three-run fifth inning to hand the Blue Devils a 6-2 loss in a seven-inning contest Saturday at Jack Cook Field.

The Blue Devils manufactured the game's first run in the opening frame without the benefit of a hit. Luke Weinberger was hit by a pitch to start the day, stole second and came around to score when a throwing error from the third baseman skipped away, giving Lawrence Tech a 1-0 advantage. WVU Tech answered in the bottom of the second, tying the game on a run-scoring ground out after a balk had moved a pinch-runner into scoring position.

WVU Tech nudged in front in the fourth and then broke the game open in the fifth. A pinch-runner again factored into the go-ahead run when N. Copeland lined a single to center to score T. Mackey and put the hosts ahead 2-1. An inning later, a ground out RBI from J. Polvinale extended the lead before J. Tibbits delivered the decisive blow, driving a two-run home run as part of a three-run fifth that pushed the margin to 5-1.

Lawrence Tech continued to battle and cut into the deficit in the sixth. Designated hitter D. Parnell sparked the inning with a triple to right field, one of his two hits on the day, and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2. Parnell finished 2-for-2 with a triple and a run scored, accounting for half of the Blue Devils' four hits.
WVU Tech responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning to put the game out of reach. With a runner aboard, M. Sims reached on an error at shortstop that allowed another run to score, setting the final at 6-2. Defensively, Lawrence Tech was charged with three errors, which contributed to multiple unearned runs and extended innings for the Blue Devils' pitching staff.

On the mound, Lawrence Tech pitchers worked six combined innings, allowing six hits while striking out seven. Relievers M. Coughlin and D. Sayyae followed the starter and helped limit WVU Tech to one run in the sixth after the big fifth-inning frame. Offensively, the Blue Devils drew four walks and had two batters hit by pitches but stranded six runners on base, unable to come up with a timely hit to sustain rallies beyond the first and sixth innings.

WVU Tech starter Co. Brown earned the win with 5.0 innings of work, holding Lawrence Tech to three hits and one run while striking out three. The Blue Devils finished with four hits, including Parnell's triple, and one stolen base while facing a WVU Tech staff that totaled six strikeouts over seven innings.

In game two A decisive four-run fourth inning lifted Lawrence Tech to a 7–4 win over WVU Tech in a seven-inning match up Saturday afternoon at Jack Cook Field.
The Blue Devils built an early lead with a three-run first inning, then answered a WVU Tech rally with a big fourth to take control. After the hosts pulled even at 3–3 with a three-run third, Lawrence Tech responded immediately, sending eight men to the plate in the fourth and pushing across four runs to put the game out of reach.

Lawrence Tech wasted no time in the opening frame. The Blue Devils loaded traffic early and cashed in when McIntyre doubled to left field for a two-run RBI that capped the three-run inning and staked Lawrence Tech to a 3–0 lead. The advantage held until the third, when WVU Tech answered with three runs of its own, highlighted by a two-run single from Tompkins to right that tied the game at 3.

The turning point came in the top of the fourth. With the game even, Dell'unto delivered the key swing, driving a two-run double to center as part of a four-run surge. A run scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI single from catcher Brady Rogers extended the margin to 7–3, providing all the offense the Blue Devils would need. Lawrence Tech finished with seven runs on six hits, drawing six walks and being hit by three pitches with eight runners.

McIntyre paced the Lawrence Tech attack with two doubles and two RBIs. Dell'unto chipped in with a double, two RBI and a stolen base out of the middle of the order. Lead off outfielder Luke Weinberger sparked the offense by reaching base three times, scoring twice, drawing a walk, getting hit by a pitch and stealing a base to pressure WVU Tech throughout the afternoon.

On the mound, the Blue Devils' staff navigated but limited damage, holding WVU Tech to four runs,  two earned, despite nine hits and five walks. Lawrence Tech pitchers combined for seven strikeouts over 7.0 innings and stranded 10 opponents on base, using key outs in the middle innings to preserve the lead after the fourth-inning.

Lawrence Tech's win was fueled by timely extra-base hitting and opportunistic base running, three doubles, two stolen bases and multiple runs generated on pressure plays.

In game three Lawrence Tech used a steady offensive attack with relentless pressure on the base path to build a nine-run cushion, then held off a late WVU Tech surge to claim a 9-4 seven-inning win Saturday at Jack Cook Field.

The Blue Devils scored in five different innings and led 9-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh before WVU Tech rallied for four runs to tighten the final margin. Lawrence Tech finished with nine runs on nine hits and capitalized on seven walks, seven stolen bases and three opponent errors to control the game from the second inning on.

Lawrence Tech broke through in the top of the second when Logan singled to center to drive in Dingman for a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils then seized command in the third. Baird doubled to left to move Weinberger into scoring position, and a wild pitch brought Weinberger home. Lee followed with a key single that produced two more runs, turning the frame into a three-run inning and stretching the advantage to 4-0.

The pressure continued in the fourth as Rogers put the ball in play and reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Ty to score and push the lead to 5-0. Lawrence Tech delivered another decisive blow in the fifth. Parnell drove a triple to center field to plate a run, Lee lifted a sacrifice fly for another RBI, and later in the inning Martinkow scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0. In the seventh, Lee helped manufacture one final run with a single, advancement on an error and a subsequent sacrifice that brought the ninth run across.

Lee headlined the Blue Devils' offense, with three RBI, a sacrifice fly, two stolen bases and a walk as Lawrence Tech consistently applied pressure. Parnell added a run-scoring triple, while Baird chipped in two hits, including a double, and scored a run. Overall, the Blue Devils' combination of timely hitting and aggressive base running forced WVU Tech's defense into difficult situations throughout the afternoon.

Lawrence Tech's pitching staff limited WVU Tech to scoreless frames through six innings and benefited from solid defensive support, committing just one error. With the win, the Blue Devils opened their match up at WVU Tech with a complete performance, combining run production, speed and clean defense to secure the road victory.

Their next opponent will be Trinity Christian College (Ill.) on the road, Feb. 27-28, before heading to Florida for the Russmatt Tournament.
