SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Lawrence Tech dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Aquinas (MI) on Saturday in Utica, falling 6-0 in game one and 7-4 in game two.
In the opener, Aquinas struck early with two runs in the first and broke the game open with three unearned runs in the third, capitalizing on four LTU errors. Despite matching Aquinas with six hits, the Blue Devils couldn't convert offensively, stranding six runners. Aquinas starter Sam Pollack went the distance, tossing a seven-inning shutout with five strikeouts to lead the Saints to the win.
Game two saw Lawrence Tech build a 4-2 lead through six innings behind timely hitting from Justin Baird, Luke Weinberger, and Evan McIntyre. The Blue Devils applied pressure on the bases with six stolen bases and finished with eight hits, but were unable to hold off a late Aquinas surge. The Saints rallied with a run in the seventh, three in the eighth to take the lead, and added a pinch-hit home run in the ninth to secure a 7-4 victory. LTU stranded 10 runners in the game, missing key opportunities to extend or reclaim the lead.
Andrew Merz led the offense in the nightcap with two hits, including a triple. Despite the losses, the Blue Devils showed offensive promise but will look to clean up defensive miscues and late-inning execution moving forward. The Blue Devils will look ahead to their next matchup vs University of Michigan Dearborn tomorrow afternoon.Â
