ADRIAN, Mich. - In game one, Lawrence Tech carried a two-run lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, but Siena Heights answered with three runs in the frame and went on to hand the Blue Devils a 5-3 loss at McLaughlin Stadium.
The game was scoreless through three innings before Lawrence Tech broke through in the top of the fourth.
Andrew Merz and
Justin Baird opened the rally with singles, and
Brady Rogers followed with an RBI single. An error on the play helped extend the inning as the Blue Devils pushed across two runs for a 2-0 advantage. Siena Heights answered in the bottom half on a throwing error and later scored on a single, trimming the lead to 2-1.
Lawrence Tech added to its lead in the fifth.
Ty Schornak came around to score on a
Luke Weinberger RBI single, giving the Blue Devils a 3-1 edge. That cushion disappeared quickly in the bottom of the inning. Siena Heights added an insurance run in the sixth scoring on a balk, extending the margin to 5-3. Lawrence Tech was unable to answer over the final two innings as Siena Heights closed out the win. The home team finished with eight hits, while the Blue Devils had six. Rogers led Lawrence Tech offensively, going 3 for 3 with an RBI. Weinberger added an RBI hit, and the Blue Devils left four runners on base.
In game two, Lawrence Tech was tied after the top of the second inning, but Siena Heights seized control with a four-run second and ended the game with a 14-5 win.The Blue Devils briefly pulled even at 1-1 when
D'Andrea Parnell doubled in the second and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Ty Schornak. Siena Heights answered immediately in the bottom half with four runs, including a two-run double, then added another run in the third to make it 6-1.
The decisive stretch came in the fourth, when Siena Heights sent six runs across to push the margin to 12-1. A key triple during the inning as the Saints continued to cash in on their opportunities. They added two more runs in the fifth, building a 14-1 lead.
Lawrence Tech showed life late and finished with 10 hits. The Blue Devils scored twice in the sixth, getting a run-producing double from
Brady Rogers and an RBI single from
Justin Baird.
Brady Lee added an RBI double later in the inning, and Lawrence Tech plated two more in the seventh when
Chase Thornton doubled home a run before
Drew Schornak followed with an RBI single.Lee paced the Blue Devils offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Thornton drove in a run in limited chances, and Lawrence Tech also stole four bases in the game. Siena Heights matched its 14 runs with 14 hits and did not commit an error, while Lawrence Tech was charged with three errors.
Siena Heights struck first in the opening inning on a RBI single, then kept applying pressure inning after inning. Lawrence Tech's late push trimmed the final margin, but the early middle-inning surge by the Saints proved too much to overcome.
The Blue Devils are set to go up against Cleary University in Utica Mich. April 3rd and 4th.
