Blue Devils Power To 21-2 Road Victory At Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Lawrence Tech blitzed Aquinas (Mich.) with nine unanswered goals in the first quarter and never looked back, rolling to a 21-2 victory in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match up Monday night at Aquinas College.

Midfielder Mari Pellmann led the Blue Devils' attack with a game-high nine points on five goals and four assists, setting the tone by scoring the first two goals of the night, including a short-handed strike at the opening quarter. Lawrence Tech built a 9-0 cushion, added six more goals in the second quarter and five in the third to put the game out of reach long before Aquinas broke through late in the fourth.

Lawrence Tech's offense dictated play from the opening draw, out shooting Aquinas 38-5 overall and 29-4 in shots on goal. The Blue Devils also controlled possession through pressure defense, forcing 23 Saints turnovers while committing just nine. Lawrence Tech finished with a 16-9 advantage in draw controls and collected 18 ground balls to Aquinas' eight, keeping the ball primarily in the attacking half for extended stretches.

Alongside Pellmann's standout effort, attacker Alyson Walendzak turned in a seven-point night with four goals and three assists, repeatedly linking play between the midfield and attack. Walendzak assisted on Pellmann's short-handed goal in the first quarter, then added a pair of key second-quarter tallies, including Lawrence Tech's 10th and 15th goals to send the Blue Devils into halftime with a commanding 15-0 lead. Bella Louwerse and Audrey Durham each recorded hat tricks, while McKenna VanZant chipped in two goals and an assist on a perfect 2-for-2 shooting performance.

The Blue Devils' special teams also contributed to the decisive margin. Lawrence Tech converted a man-up opportunity in the first quarter when Durham scored off a feed from Walendzak, and the defense produced offense with Pellmann's early short-handed goal. At the close of the third quarter, Pellmann found Louwerse for a goal with 22 seconds remaining to extend the lead to 20-0 and cap another dominant frame.

Aquinas scored both of its goals in the fourth quarter, but Lawrence Tech answered in between on a finish from VanZant to restore a 20-goal margin. Blue Devils goalkeepers combined for two saves behind a defense that limited Aquinas to five total shots and challenged nearly every possession.

With the road victory in light snow showers and cold conditions, Lawrence Tech added an emphatic early-season conference win and carried momentum into a quick turnaround at home. The Blue Devils are scheduled to return to Southfield to face Kalamazoo College at Blue Devils Stadium, looking to build on a performance that showcased balance on offense, pressure on rides and clears, and depth across the attacking unit.
