UTICA, Mich. – Game one of the doubleheader, Lawrence Tech was shut out by Lourdes, 3-0. Lawrence Tech starter
Ethan Hochendoner matched Lourdes for much of the night and also went the distance, allowing seven hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out seven over seven innings. Hochendoner worked through traffic repeatedly and kept the Blue Devils within reach despite Lourdes taking advantage of a pair of later scoring chances.
Lourdes added its second run in the fifth on an error by Lawrence Tech, allowing a run to score. The Gray Wolves then tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, with a single to second base to bring home a run and extend the margin to 3-0.
The Blue Devils collected seven hits of their own but could not turn those opportunities into a breakthrough. Lawrence Tech left eight runners on base, compared to Lourdes's six, and committed three errors in the field.
Brady Rogers provided the top offensive performance for the Blue Devils, going 3-for-3 and adding a stolen base.
In game two, Lawrence Tech built an early lead and finished with a late push, defeating Lourdes 4-0, behind seven scoreless innings from
Kenny Wright and a two-run eighth inning that put the game away.
The Blue Devils scored once in the first and once in the second before breaking it open in the eighth.
Ty Schornak gave Lawrence Tech a 1-0 lead in the opening inning with a bases-loaded walk that brought home
Luke Weinberger. In the second,
Brady Rogers delivered an RBI to score
Bess Brayden and make it 2-0.
The Lawrence Tech starter worked seven innings, allowed three hits, walked three and struck out five while facing 25 batters. He kept Lourdes off the scoreboard throughout his outing, and the Blue Devils' relievers finished the shutout over the final two innings.
Lawrence Tech added needed separation in the eighth. Rogers opened the rally by doubling down the right-field line to move into scoring position.
Justin Baird followed with a triple down the right-field line, driving in Rogers for a 3-0 advantage. Schornak then produced his second RBI of the game on a groundout that scored Baird and stretched the lead to four.
The Blue Devils finished with eight hits. Rogers went 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Baird went 1 for 4 with the RBI triple and also scored. Schornak drove in two runs, had one hit and stole a base. Lawrence Tech also drew three walks and left seven runners on base.
They are scheduled to compete on the road this Sunday, April 12 in Livonia, Mich. against Madonna University.
