OAKLAND, Mich. - Lawrence Tech had a productive day at the Oakland Elaine Leigh Invite on Sunday, producing several event wins, school records and personal bests. Although the weather forced the Blue Devils to scratch several events, the athletes who competed capitalized on the opportunity and delivered one of the team's stronger all-around meets of the outdoor season.
The women's 100-meter hurdles provided one of the meet's biggest storylines for Lawrence Tech. Latrice Williams led a trio of Blue Devils into the finals and then ran a lifetime-best 13.86, a mark that set a new school record and moved her to No. 4 in the NAIA. Martina Montserrat-Vilar also posted a standout race at 14.16, improving to No. 17 nationally, while Jade Ullenbruch joined both teammates in the final to give Lawrence Tech three finalists in the event.
In the sprints, Anaiia Simmons finished second overall in the women's 100-meter final with a lifetime-best 12.01. That performance also established a new school record, adding another headline result for the Blue Devils. On the men's side, Lawrence Tech controlled the 100-meter final with a 1-2 finish, continuing the team's strong showing on the track even as conditions remained difficult throughout the meet.
The Blue Devils also made their mark in the field events. Arianna Bragg and Aniya Brown went 1-2 in the triple jump, with Bragg claiming the event title. In the throws, Maya Freeman added to the record-setting day by breaking the school record in the hammer, giving Lawrence Tech another significant result in a meet that featured quality performances across multiple event groups.
Lawrence Tech found more success in the distance races, where Graeson Lawrence won the steeplechase and moved into the national picture at No. 20 in the NAIA. Combined with the hurdles, sprint and field-event performances, the victory underscored the team's range and helped round out a meet full of impact results despite an incomplete event slate.
With multiple wins, two school records on the track, another in the hammer and a long list of personal bests, the Blue Devils left the Oakland Elaine Leigh Invite with momentum heading into their next competition. Lawrence Tech is scheduled to compete again April 24 at the Don Kleinow Memorial Invite in Siena Heights, Michigan.
