Blue Devils Open 2019 Gray Wolf Classic with a 2-0 Record after Defeating Robert Morris (lll.) 3-2 and Webber International (Fla.) 3-2

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's volleyball team opened the Gray Wolf Invitational with a pair of 3-2 wins. They defeated Webber (Fla.) International in the first game of the day while defeating Robert Morris (Ill.) University in the final match of the day.

Lawrence Tech 3 vs. 2 Webber International (Fla.)

Lawrence Tech (5-4, 1-1) opened the fifth set with a 9-3 run, needing just six points to seal win, but the Blue Devils battled back to within two at 10-8. Webber International extended its lead to 13-10, but points from Calvin Ooms, a block assist from Max Jewett and Gospel Sua, and an ace from Sua tied the match at 14-14. The Warriors went back up 15-14, but a kill from Jewett and an service ace from Ooms won the match at 17-15.

The Blue Devils opened the match on a 7-1 run as they built a 13-3 lead on a block from Ooms and Max Jewett. Webber International cut the lead to 14-9 as they strung a 6-1 run together, but Lawrence Tech closed the set out strong with a 25-16 win.

Webber International answered the Blue Devils in the second set as they built a 6-3 lead before LTU tied it at 6-6. The teams went back-and-forth the rest of the set, including six ties as the Warriors squeaked out a 25-22 win to tie the match at 1-1.

The Blue Devils trailed the Warriors early, but like the second set, it went back-and-forth with six-ties. Lawrence Tech tied the set at 15-15 and ended the set with a 10-6 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Ooms won four straight service points to start the run while Patton had four kills.

The Warriors tied the match at 2-2 in the fourth set, winning 25-21 force the fifth and deciding set. Webber International hit .258 while committing just six errors. The Blue Devils finished the set with a .107 and seven errors.

Lawrence Tech 3 vs. 2 Robert Morris (Ill.)

The Blue Devils and Eagles played a thrilling five set match to end the night at the Gray Wolf Invitational. Robert Morris opened the first set with a 26-24 win as both team hits over 38 percent with the Eagles hitting .471.

Lawrence Tech took the second set with a 29-27 win as they forced Robert Morris into 12 errors while hitting 22.9 percent. The Blue Devils trailed 18-13 before they embarked on an 8-3 run to tie the set at 21-21. The teams traded points down the stretch with five ties, but it was the Blue Devils who earned the final two points with kills from Zachary Narkiewicz and Ooms for the 29-27 win.

The Blue Devils took the lead after the third set, but the Eagles fought back in the fourth set to earn a 25-19 win and tie the match at 2-2. In the final set, the Blue Devils led 3-1, but Robert Morris tied it at 4-4. An 8-2 run by Lawrence Tech put the Blue Devils up 12-6 as an attack error by the Eagles closed the set at 15-9 to secure the 3-2 win.
