LTU Softball Splits in Double Header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Rio Grande, OH - The Blue Devils softball team played Rio Grande for the 3rd time on the weekend. The only scoring in this game came in the 5th inning from both teams. A lot of hits from both teams in Game 1, but only a slight margin for runs. The final score in Game 1 was LTU 1, Rio Grande 3. Clover Brandt and Madison Shumaker were the two pitchers LTU had in Game 1. Game 2 pitchers were Shumaker and Makayla Benz. LTU won Game 2 in extra innings by a final score of 3-2

LTU ended this game with 10 hits on 1 error, leaving 9 runners on base.

Game 1 (LTU 1, Rio Grande 3): LTU was able to string a solid amount of hits in this one, but could not seem to get any run support throughout. LTU tried to find some life in the 5th inning where they were able to find 1 run off a couple of LTU hits. Leading off the 5th in Elizabeth Coon singled to left and advanced to second on a stolen base a couple pitch later. Sarah Hige came up and hit a sacrifice bunt, to advance Coon to third. Haley Mazon then came up to the plate, and hit a huge double to deep left which scored Coon. That was the only rally the team had all game.

How it Happened: Clover Brandt was on the bump to start Game 1. She pitched a total of 4.2 innings. She finished the game with 2 strikeouts on 5 hits. She threw a total of 60 pitches and faced 18 batters. Coming in from the bullpen, was Shumaker who finished the game with 1.1 innings. She threw 28 total pitches on 0 strikeouts. Both had 0 ER. LTU left 9 runners on base in this one. Rio Grande scored their only 3 runs in the bottom half of the 5th inning, and that was enough to beat LTU 3-1.

The Blue Devils batters finished Game 1 with a team batting average of .357, 1 RBI, 7 KO's, and 10 hits.

Game 2 (LTU 3, SMWC 2): An extra inning thriller is what Game 2 came down to. This game was a battle and went all the way to the 9th inning. LTU was able to cap off the victory in the bottom of the 9th inning for a walk off win. Lefty, Madison Shumaker got the start in Game 2 for the Blue Devils as she pitched the first 4 innings and gave up 1 ER on 0 strikeouts. She allowed 0 hits on 1 run. She faced 15 batters. After dealing for most of the game, Shumaker was then replaced by right hander, Makayla Benz who pitched 5 innings giving up 1 hit. She was able to strike out 3 batters and faced a total of 16 batters.

How it Happened:  Game 2 had a different type of energy throughout the game. It was mostly tied 2-2 throughout the game. Before, getting into the offensive side of the ball, the Blue Devil pitching was phenomenal in this one only allowing 1 hit all game. Both pitchers were dealing all game, and the defense was consistently making plays. Leading the team in hits in Game 2 was Sarah Hige and Lauren Lanphear with 2 each. Lanphear also was the team leader in RBI's with 2 of her own. In extra innings there is an international Tie Breaker, so a runner starts at second base, which in this case was Brittany Wieland. Callie Tatum then bunted and reached on a base hit. Brittany WIELAND advanced to third, on the bunt. Lanphear was up next and singled to shallow center, and Wieland came in to score to seal the walk off victory in the 9th inning.

The teams batting average was .286 and they held their opponent to a .036 batting average. LTU allowed 3 errors in this one.

On Deck: The Blue Devils (6-5) plays at double header against Georgetown in Georgetown, Kentucky on Tuesday, March 23rd. The games are scheduled to be played at 1 PM and 3 PM. The game will be played at the Tiger Softball Complex
