Softball Splits DH against Georgetown College

Georgetown, KY - The Blue Devils softball played another double header on the road as they traveled to Georgetown, Kentucky to face Georgetown College Tigers. Georgetown sparked the bats early scoring 5 runs in the first inning in Game 1. LTU had to play behind all game. The final score in Game 1 was LTU 0, Georgetown College 8. Makayla Benz was the only pitcher in Game 1 for LTU. Game 2 pitchers were Shumaker and Makayla Benz. LTU won Game 2 in extra innings by a final score of 3-2
 
LTU ended this game with only 2 hits, 4 K's and 3 Errors.  


Game 1 (LTU 0, Georgetown 8): The Blue Devils could not get much offense going in this one as they were held to only 2 hits on the day. Throughout the game, Coach was making some subs, as well as some pinch runners and hitters as the team was looking for any type of spark off the bench. Georgetown scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, and dominated the game ever since. This game went final in the 6th inning.


How it Happened: Makayla Benz was the Game 1 pitcher for LTU. She got the loss in this one and pitched 5.1 innings. She gave up 8 runs on 10 hits, walking 3 batters and ended the game with 4 strikeouts. Total batters Benz faced was 30. She also gave up 4 XBH, and all runs were earned runs. The only hits on the day came from Brittany Wieland, who bats 4th for the team as she went 1-3 with 2 K's. Nicole Powrozek also was able to find a hole as she went 1-1. LTU left 5 runners on base in this one.

The Blue Devils batters finished Game 1 with a team batting average of .105, 0 RBI, 4 KO's, and 2 hits.

 

Game 2 (LTU 7, Georgetown 6 - Final 8th): Another extra inning battle for the Blue Devils. A lot more action from the LTU offense compared to Game 1. The scoring was back and forth all game. LTU was able to seal the deal with some clutch home runs from Haley Mazon, she hit 2 in the game. Lefty, Madison Shumaker got the start in Game 2 for the Blue Devils and she pitched a complete game. She gave up 5 earned runs, but that was just enough as she had a lot of support from her offense as they put up 7 runs in this one. Shumaker finished with 2 strikeouts, and throwing 131 pitches. She faced 38 batters and walked 6.

 
How it Happened:  Game 2 had a lot more action in terms of scoring for LTU. It started from a leadoff triple from Sarah Hige, she ended up scoring in the 1st to give LTU an early 1-0 lead. Georgetown scored 5 unanswered runs in the next two innings to give them a 5-1 lead. The Blue Devils battled back, to decrease that lead to 1 run where they scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning. Scoring for the team was Hige, Mazon and Callie Tatum. Moving to the top of the 7th, Mazon comes through big for the team and homered to tie the game up at 5-5. Later in the inning, Sidney Croskey singled to deep center, which then was drove in a run from Wieland to take the lead by 1. In extra innings, the hot bat of the game, Mazon came back to the dish and answered with another homer to give LTU the win. Hige went 3-4 with 2 runs. Mazon went 4-5 with 3 runs and 2 HR's. Wieland went 2-3 and 1 run. LTU won 7-6 in a close one.

The teams batting average was .371. 13 total hits and only 1 error.

  

On Deck: The Blue Devils (7-6) is back at home Saturday March, 27th after a long road trip. The team plays conference opponent, Concordia University at Total Sports Complex. First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 1 PM and Game 2 is scheduled for 3 PM.
