Box Score 2 Beckley, West Virginia - The Blue Devils softball team (2-2) was back at it on the diamond this weekend. The team is coming off a sweep of their own this week and were looking to bounce back going down south to play West Virginia Tech University. Matter of fact, that did happen as LTU was able to snag two wins by a score of 14-5 in the first double header game. In the second game of the double header LTU won by a score of 4-1.
LTU's offense was hot in the first game as they put together 12 hits as team. It only took the Blue Devils until the third inning before they scored 5 runs. From then on, the team was able to score in every single inning after the third to cap off their 14 runs in the win. This puts the Blue Devils at a 2-2 record on the year.
Game 1 (LTU 14, WVU Tech 5): The middle of the lineup was finding the gaps all afternoon for your Blue Devils as Brittany Wieland and Callie Tatum were both able to get two hits each. Wieland was 2-4, 3 Runs, 3 RBI. Tatum went 2-3, 3 Runs, and 2 RBI and 2 BB.
How it Happened: Clover Brandt (1-0) got the opening game nod in the circle as she finished the game with 3.2 innings giving up 8 hits, 4 ER, and 5 strikeouts. Coming in from the bullpen in this one was Madison Shumaker and she finished the day pitching 3.1 innings giving up 1 ER, 3 hits, and 2 strikeouts. The offense was a huge help as they put together many rallies throughout the game finishing with 14 runs. Brandt threw 74 total pitches and Shumaker threw a total of 50 pitches.
The Blue Devils batters finished game 1 with 13 RBI, 6 KO's, and 7 BB's. The team was connected with the bats as they strung together 12 hits. The team's total batting average was .343. They total a total of 3 bases as well.
Game 2 (LTU 4, WVU Tech 1): Makayla Benz was on the bump for the Blue Devils in Game 2 and dealing all day pitching a complete game gem giving up 0 ER and 10 strikeouts. Total of only 90 pitches, facing 24 batters. WVU Tech only had 3 hits on the day. Benz was painting the corners all day. It was a tie ball game up until the 4th inning as Benz got some help from her offense as they capped off a 3 run inning giving them a 3-0. WVU scored 1 run in the 6th, and LTU scored 1 more in the top of the 7th to win the game 4-1.
How it Happened: It was a pitching duel up until the 3rd inning. Sarah Hige was able to go 2-4 with 1 run. Brittany Wieland had herself a day going 3-4 with 1 run on the day. She also stole 2 bases. The Blue Devils were pretty sharp on defense only allowing 3 errors. Benz had much help from both sides of the ball in game 2. LTU did leave 9 runners left on base, but were able to still rack 10 hits and 4 runs. The team stole a total of an impressive 6 steals. The team's batting average was .313. Haley Mazon entered the game for Coon in the 4th inning and played right field the rest of the game. Mazon had the last two at bats in the second hitting spot. She was able to go 1-2 from the plate bringing some energy off the bench for the Blue Devils
On Deck: The Blue Devils (2-2) will travel to Aurora, Illinois on Friday, March 12th and play a double header against Trinity Christian. The first pitch in game 1 will begin at 11:30 AM and the first pitch in game 2 will begin at 1:30 PM. The game will be played at the Aurora Sports Zone.
