Softball Gets Swept Against UNOH

Lima, OH - The Blue Devils softball team played a double header on the road in Lima, OH against one of the conference leading teams, Northwestern Ohio (24-13). Both games were competitive as LTU had many chances to either take the lead or win the game in both games. Game 1 the final score was 3-8. In Game 2, LTU found themselves coming back late in the 7th, but just wasn't enough as they came up short with a final score of 4-6. Game 1 starter was Clover Brandt. Game 2 starting pitcher was Madison Shumaker.


Game 1 (LTU 3, UNOH 8): The Blue Devils found themselves in the lead for majority of the game. Heading into the bottom of the 5th inning, LTU had the lead 3-1. The Blue Devils first run came from a Sarah Hige single to center field which scores Sidney Croskey. Moving to the 5th, Hige was able to hustle home from third base and score on a wild pitch, where Callie Tatum advanced to third on the same pitch. This then led to Katie Courneya hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, tagging up was Tatum to score. That was the last of the LTU offense as far as scoring. Heading into the bottom of the 5th, LTU struggled defensively and gave up 6 runs to UNOH. The Racers scored 1 more run in the 6th inning, and the final score in this one was 3-8. Tatum went 2-4 with 1 run. Leah Kadlitz went 3-3 on the day and Hige went 1-4 for the team.


How it Happened: Clover Brandt was the starter for Game 1. She pitched a great game overall, but got in some trouble late in the 5th. Brandt pitched a total of 4.2 innings. She gave up 6 hits on 3 runs. She struck out 2 and faced a total of 19 batters. 57 total pitches. Makayla Benz came on in relief for Brandt. Benz finished this game pitching 1.1 innings. She faced 9 total batters, striking out 2. She gave up 5 hits and 5 runs. 36 total pitches.

LTU ended this game with only 1 error and 6 total hits. The team's batting average in Game 1 was .222. The team struck out 6 times on the day.

 

Game 2 (LTU 4, UNOH 6): Game 2 starter on the mound for the Blue Devils was lefty, Madison Shumaker. Madison only lasted 3.2 innings after she was caught in a jam in the 4th. She gave up 6 hits and 5 runs. Shumaker struck out 3 batters, but was replaced in the 4th inning. 17 batters faced on 47 total pitches. Replacing her was, Clover Brandt (Game 1 starter), and she game in to complete the game from LTU. She pitched a total of 2.2 innings. Only giving up 1 run and 3 hits. 10 batters faced on 30 total pitches.

 
How it Happened:  LTU struggled on offense, they showed signs of life late in the 7th, but by that time it was too late for a comeback. LTU was able to score in the top of the 3rd inning from an Erin Wehler single on a line drive to right field, which brought Brittney Wieland around to score. The 7th inning rally came from a Wehler, 2 RBI double which scored Elizabeth Coon and Wieland. Croskey then steps up to the plate and ropes a line drive single to center field to bring around Wehler. That was all for LTU as they came up short by a final score of 4-6. Hige went 2-4, Wieland went 2-4, 2 runs. Wehler went 2-3 with 1 run and 3 RBI. Croskey wen 1-4 with 1 RBI. Coon was able to go 2-3 with 1 run.

The teams batting average in this game was .312, 4 RBI and only 1 KO and 3 errors on the game.

On Deck: The Blue Devils (14-17) next double header will be Wednesday, April 28th at Madonna University. The games will be played at The Madonna Athletic Complex. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 3 PM. Game 2 is scheduled to start at 5 PM.
