GATES MILLS, Ohio - The Lawrence Technological Blue Devils D1 Hockey team opened their season on the road, playing three games this weekend against John Carroll University (twice) and Kent State University. The Blue Devils controlled all three games of their weekend set, coming away with an undefeated weekend.
Friday @ John Carroll, W 8-1:
- Eric Podgorny and Thimo Ey set up Jacob Stawinski for the first goal of the Blue Devils' season with five minutes remaining in the first period, which led to a 1-0 lead into first intermission
- Nicholas Ceccarini puts one behind the crease to extend the LTU lead to 2
- JCU cut the deficit in half after a power-play goal. LTU 2, JCU 1 at second intermission
- The Blue Devils went on a scoring barrage in the third period, scoring six goals, including 4 power-play goals in a two minute and twenty-second span
- Blake Heier scored two goals in the third period alone
Saturday @ John Carroll, W 11-2:
- Joshua Hixon gave LTU an early 1-0 lead with 12:41 left in the first period, off assists by Stawinski and Heier
- Keegan Rundle gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 jumpstart into the first intermission
- Two Brendan Preiss goals in the first seven minutes of the second period sandwich a JCU goal, 4-1 LTU
- The Blue Devils would tack on three more second-period goals: Heier (PP), Dylan Magdich and Sean Pilet before JCU scores their last goal of the game. LTU 7, JCU 2
- Preiss finishes off his hat-trick midway through the period.
- Justin Hubenschmidt and Maximus Nguyen score the final two goals within 10 second of each other
Sunday @ Kent State, W 3-2 (SO):
- John Horn sets up Pilet to give the Blue Devils an early lead
- Kent State evened it at one early into the second period
- Liam Bland gave the Blue Devils a lead in the third period, from Garrett Sample
- The Golden Flashes knotted it with a power-play late in the third period
- No goals were scored in overtime, so we went to a shootout
- Horn scores the only shootout goal, to give the Blue Devils a 3-2 victory
The Blue Devils (3-0-0) return to the ice on October 7, when they start a home-and home with Cleary University. The puck drops at 8pm at the Farmington Hills Ice Arena
