Utica, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological University baseball team won a pair of Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference games versus the Aquinas College Saints, 2-1 and 10-2, while earning the program's 100
th win in game one before starting pitcher
Alek Wietryzkowski broke his own program record with 18 strikeouts in game two.
How It Happened:
Game One
- Nick Post begin the second inning with a leadoff double to center field. After he was sacrificed to third, Kellen Banaszewski hit a fly ball to right field to plate Post and make it 1-0 LTU.
- Banaszewski would drive in the second LTU run in the fourth, courtesy of the long ball to left field.
- The Saints cut the deficit in half in the sixth as a one out triple was followed by an RBI double down the left field line.
- The Blue Devils avoided any further damage by stranding runners in scoring position with a line out to second.
- Ben Schmidt worked around a 2-out single in the seventh to earn the complete-game win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Schmidt threw a complete game, scattering six hits while allowing just one run to go along with four strikeouts and no walks.
- AQ outhit LTU 6-4 while the Blue Devils left one more runner on base than the Saints (5-4).
- Banaszewski led the Blue Devils out of the 9-hole, going 1-for-1 with a HR and 2 RBIs.
Game Two
- A Jackson Walkowiak grand slam to right center put LTU ahead 4-0 in the first.
- The Blue Devils tagged on two more via a balk and a Cameron Hardy RBI groundout to hold a 6-0 lead after one inning.
- Aquinas added two back in the second via a throwing error on an attempted force out at second base that was thrown into right field.
- Post's double to left center added one back in the third as he plated Luke Morrissette.
- Hardy earned his second RBI of the game on an infield single in the 5-hole that once again scored Morrissette, this time in the fifth.
- Nick Olsen tacked on another in the sixth with an RBI double to center before an RBI groundout by Walkowiak ended the scoring in the eighth as LTU won 10-2.
Inside the Numbers:
- Wietryzkowski went the distance for his fourth straight complete game, allowing just four hits and two runs (zero earned runs) while fanning a program-record 18. The senior struck out 17 back on 3/5 against Dordt during spring break.
- Harry Storch went 3-for-4 with 2 R and a BB to set the table for the LTU offense.
- Nick Olsen added a pair of hits, 2-for-3 with 2 BB, 2 R, RBI.
- LTU outhit AQ 8-4 while the Saints left two more runners of base then the Blue Devils (8-6).
Lawrence Tech is scheduled to take the field at Jimmy John's Field on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader against IU-Kokomo, beginning at 2 pm.
